Need help with new 91 IROC purchase
Hey guys I am new to this so take it ez on me. I bought a 84 camaro a few years ago and signed up to these forums to help restore it. It was going great until someone stole my car. Now like 3 years later I'm back again and need help with this purchase.
The add reads:
Black, automatic, has a 5.7 350engine, motor has been redone,3inch pipes, 700 r4 transmission with shift kit, primed ready to paint, no dents, tires are made for track~not to slide(N-50's pro series tires), black coated rims, fast running car. $1,500
I seen the car, it's not perfect and i didn't expect it to be. The steering wheel is broken, like you can pull it down and push it up. The body is almost rust free, the only problem i saw was the wheel wells could use some rust protection and the ground kit has a few pieces broken. The car has a lot of power, enough to make me think the engine alone is worth a good bit of that 1500. The main question is : How do I find out it is what they say it is? He said it was a 5.7 350 IROC Z but i don't know how to tell, can i just run the VIN or is there certain things to look for to find out exactly what it is and what it isn't?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can educate me on this matter.

Re: Need help with new 91 IROC purchase
A little research just proved that 1990 was the last year the IROC Z was made. So there is no such thing as a 1991 IROC Z ..... interesting this seems shady

Re: Need help with new 91 IROC purchase
It was the last year for the Iroc, but this could be a Z28. Wing on back, wheels, and gfx point that way but as they could have be put on later I don't know for sure. One way to tell what it is, is to find the SPID sticker either on the underside of the center console lid or in one of the compartments in the back. It will have all the RPOs Z28 will be one of them. There are others who might know more about these cars than I do. Other than that 1500 for that car doesn't sound too bad if all the bodywork is done and it runs smooth, etc.

Re: Need help with new 91 IROC purchase
I was just looking at the pic a little more. It is a Z28. Chevy replaced the Iroc with the Z28, so it looks like it might be legit but don't take my word for it as I am not the most knowledgeable person on these cars. (I know Firebirds more than Camaros though I love them both.)

It appears to be a Z28. I cannot tell from my laptop, but it appears to have the hood blisters, and I can obviously see the rear wing.
$1500 for any running 91-92 Z in my book is a good price. An L98 Z, an awesome price.
it looks like it has had a hard life tho...

G: General Motors

F: F-Body
P: Sport Coupe, Z28 (same letter for both models)
2: Hatchback
3: Manual restraints with driver airbag
8: L98 (5.7 TPI)

M: 1991 (Model Year)
L: Van Nuys Assembly Plant
From how that decodes you got a L98 Z28 and at 1500 bucks its a steal.

Re: Need help with new 91 IROC purchase
Well this is all good then. My only concern now is that I'm able to get in registered and inspected for the state of Hawaii. I broke down and checked carfax for $30 and it has not been registered since 2002 .... what does this mean, back taxes?

Re: Need help with new 91 IROC purchase
I think it means that the car hasnt had registered license plates on it since 2002. So its been unlicensed and not legal to drive on the road since 2002. Many reasons, broken down and sitting, not passing emmisions testing in that state, racecar only car, lost title to name a few. Still a good deal for a 350 tpi car.

Re: Need help with new 91 IROC purchase
My car has not been road legal since 2002 and the last time it was registered was 2003 I believe. I talked to the DMV and they told me if I turn in the plates with an explanation why we took it off the road they won't charge us for the back fees on the car, and we can just get new plates. However, because we might register it in my name this time around it might not matter as my name might be on the title. I don't think it matters if a person buys a car and then the registration changes. You don't have to pay the back fees unless you keep the same plates. I am sure if I look up my car it will say the same thing about not being registered since 2002 or 3 and that just means it hasn't been in the registry for a few years for some reason or another.
Re: Need help with new 91 IROC purchase
There is no such thing as a 1991 IROC Z. 1990 was indeed the last year. Many people say its an IROC Z in hopes to sell the car quicker to a buyer that does not know much about them. Supreme Member

Re: Need help with new 91 IROC purchase
One thing to not is all Z28's in 1991 & 1992 had the LB9 (TPI) as a minimum, and the L98 as an option. (the exception is exported Z28's that could have the LO3)
The IROC in 1985 could have been purchased with an LG4 (4bbl), L69 (4bbl HO or LB9 (TPI).

Re: Need help with new 91 IROC purchase
Well guys, I bought the car. Thanks for all the help here.
Nice looking car, but it was far from perfect. Engine compartment has rust holes !! I have access to a body shop so i hope I can just pull the engine and throw up some sheet metal.
Anyone know where to start if the RPM gauge does not work ?

Re: Need help with new 91 IROC purchase
"I need tags for this car, here's the last registration for it"
"Why hasn't it been tagged since 2006"
"I just haven't needed to drive it and now I do"
"Ok, that will be $22"
take tag, put on car, drive car.

The wiring I do not think was too bad, it took me about 2 days. Getting them routed correctly is the hardest part.
