Completely Confused about my IROC

I am completely confused on whether or not I have an IROC. My camaro is suppose to be a 1989 IROC.

Why yes
1. VIN says its 5.0L V8 TBI OHV 16V
2. RPO code 1FP87 says its an IROC
3. Every other RPO adds up correctly (ie color and engine)
4. IROC emblems on rear and dash

Why no
1. It has IROC decals toward the front side. RPO code DX3 says it a decal and stripe delete.
2. Doesnt have the Z28 = IROC-Z Option RPO code
3. I have no fog lights
4. Steering wheel is square center. Believe it should be round.

The VIN on my sticker in the console matches my VIN on my dash.

Re: Completely Confused about my IROC

When the IROC became the base sport model replacing the Z28 in 1988, only RPO Z28 is used (thru 1990). If you don't have the Z28 RPO you don't have an IROC. And I'm not so sure that 1FP87 necessarily means it's an IROC, I think that means it can also be a sports coupe (RS) (1FP87) = 2-Door Hatchback. It's suspicious that it has no Z28 RPO and the decal delete but it has the decals, sounds like maybe a clone?

Re: Completely Confused about my IROC

Would a full carfax provide any more info in regard to being an IROC? This is what a free inquiry from carfax shows.

Year/Make/Model:1989 CHEVROLET CAMARO
Body Style: COUPE
Engine Type:5.0L V8 TBI OHV 16V
Manufactured In: UNITED STATES

Would a true IROC vin provide anything info saying its is indeed a IROC?

Re: Completely Confused about my IROC

Most people producing a clone will overlook the steering wheel as replacement wheels are expensive. The 1FP87 only denotes the body of the car and does not specify IROC-Z, Z28, RS or Sport Coupe. The fact that you don't have the Z28 RPO tells me that the car is not an IROC-Z. The steering wheel is another giveaway. Carfax will not provide you with any additional info than this. Also, the fact that the fog lights are missing means that someone never completed the IROC-Z conversion. I hope you didn't pay good money for an IROC-Z, because you have an RS.

I just looked at your pictures and see that it has the RS rims and taillights. These rims were not available on an 89 IROC-Z.

Re: Completely Confused about my IROC

As incomplete as the transformation appears, I'd be surprised if the Wonderbar were in place either.

Re: Completely Confused about my IROC

Welcome to the boards,
CARFAX is almost useless for telling you waht model you actually have. They go by the VIN, which would not tell you what options it came with. Since the Sport Coupe (SC), Z28 and IROC-Z were avaialble with the Base V8 LG4 4bbl from 1982-1987 or LO3 TBI from 1988 & 1989. If you have an LB9 (TPI) or L98 350 TPI then yes you would have at least the Z28 possibly the IROC.

Unfortuantely, the car appears to be a clone, Or at least a car with the wrong wheels. The stance does throw me off a little, I thought the IROC was ever so slightly lower than the SC. Not sure, it may be the extra weight from the GFX, or an optical illusion.

Re: Completely Confused about my IROC

I remember running into a guy in the 80's who was very proud that he had nearly completed turning his ride into an IROC - extremely proud of the money he had saved. Any one have an idea how common clones were / are?

Re: Completely Confused about my IROC

Yea...I got taken. Paid 4k for this thing. Based on what I see other cars going for, I guess I might have paid a little to much for a plain Jane RS. I'm a little disappointed but I've enjoyed it. Its actually in great condition. I give the jerk credit- did a good job tricking me.

Re: Completely Confused about my IROC

Are you sure the guy tricked you? He might have been told it was an Iroc when he bought it and didn't research it himself. I don't want to look like I'm defending a scammer but a lot of third gens aren't what previous owners claim them to be (like 75% of the TPI engines being L98's, even original 85's... seen that a couple times) so he might have got taken on it and had no clue.

On a side note, it looks like a really clean car for being in Illinois (if you bought it local). Around these parts 4k really isn't that bad for a clean rust free third gen. So it might have been a bit too much for an RS in Florida or California but it's probably one of the nicer third gens in your area. Location still plays a part on the price of our cars.
