ok so why would sombody order an 86 iroc with what seems to be every option possible, the overhead console, power windows, power locks, t-tops, power drivers seat and well you guys get my drift and then order it w/ a 155 hp 4bbl 305. why wouldnt they get it w/ the tuned port. anybody else have an iroc like this, i'm guessin so but i'm just curious.

For the same reason they would order those options on a V6 car. Some people don't care about the HP, they just wanna look good.

If I remember correctly, the 5-speed was only available with the 155hp 305 in '86. So if you wanted to shift it yourself in '86 that was the only way to go. Someone please correct me if the is not right.

Welcome to TGO, sparks. My 85 is well optioned but was a 155 hp LG4. I too always thought that 155 was foolish, but those were the times. Anyway, I've always liked the sleeper look as well. Check my Car Details below, if you wish, to see my sleeper.

Re: 86 iroc options

I grew up in the 80's and I can remember many people back then hated any kind of fuel injection, you gotta remember the TPI only came out in '85, and these were people used to 70's cars.

I think GM kept the carb for the people who resisted the change, and they offered the TPI for the ones who wanted to stick their toes in the water and try out something new. The TBI ended up being somewhat of a compromise, but even it was phased out eventually.

Sorry, I guess I should have clarified about the LG4. The LG4 could be had with either an auto or 5-speed, but if you wanted a 5-speed you could not get it with the TPI in '86.

Also, remember that people didn't normally order cars, the dealers do. Most cars are sold off dealer inventory, not special order.

I think this played a big role. GM's fuel-injection systems of the 1970s (Cadillac) and early 1980s (Cross-Fire) had some issues and were not very well received. A lot of customers were reluctant to move away from the tried-and-true carburetor. TPI was really the first "successful" fuel injection system that GM used on a large number of vehicles over several years (I don't count the 1957-65 Corvettes, because FI was a rare and expensive option on those). But TPI took a few years to really catch on.

The other element is, I suspect, typical GM cost-cutting. The LG4 was used in a variety of other vehicles, from Bonnevilles to Monte Carlos to Caprices to trucks, so there were economies of scale in installing it in a majority of V8 F-bodies also.
