Re: Stock MPG?
That is pretty bad.....

My 1987 GTA with 200,000 miles, 350 TPI/Auto/3.27, gets 21mpg on the open interstate, 15/16 around town.

How's yours run?
Burn oil?
Maintained well or dogged?
Rear gears?
How do YOU drive.....Full throttle light to light or......?

Re: Stock MPG?
I try to drive it conservativly for the most part while cruising but I love to floor it for short distances because well...who doesnt?...It takes me alittle under a week to run through a full tank. My camaro definently isnt the best running car on the block. It back fires like no other if im slowing down rapidly. Im sure that it needs a new....uhm...PCV valve? or whatever their called those weird flying saucer looking things that let exhaust back into the engine, and it was not well maintained by the previous owner. I could be wrong at how much I estimate. Ill reset my trip planner today cuz I refilled the tank with 12 gallons last night and ill see how far I go on that much then re calculate. Its a 5 speed manual but other then that I dont know what the gearing is. I assume its stock. Doesnt burn any oil. I never drive with A/C because...well it doesnt work. Are there any simple parts I could order that would increase mpg? Performance or stock? New bearings? Or anything like a thorough cleaning of the throat/injectors?

That's really bad and not normal. Have you figured out what it actually does?

Fill the tank, record the odometer, drive till near empty, fill the tank again and record the odometer, figure the odo difference for the distance driven and divide how many gallons on the second fill (amount of gas used).

Sometimes there can be quite a difference between what we think we get and what we actually get.

My ride has an LB9 305 TPI, 5spd & 3.08 rear end. If I drive nice, I can easily get 26mpg. Sometimes on a few stretches I've managed a rare 28mpg. This is all flat highway driving. In fact my old '89 Camaro is the most fuel efficient ride my family owns! ('68 Chrysler, '02 Trailblazer, '06 Dodge Caravan).
I do understand that my engine/drivetrain combo is about as good as it gets when it come to 3rd gen mileage with a V8, but properly tuned and running you should be getting way more.

Re: Stock MPG?
Thats really below the average, i have 80K on my 350 TPI and i get around 16 in the city and about 21 on highway, most emission equipment is unhooked though, even though i still run cats. Usually throttle body injected cars run about 15-17 city as i usually know.

Re: Stock MPG?
A "lightly" driven L98 should be able to hit the advertised 16/25. As soon as you get into it that goes out the window though LOL.

Re: Stock MPG?
Lol sometimes in florida, if you want to get out at an intersection, you sometimes have to punch it lol, When i first bought the car it got was around 17 average because i couldnt drive it much, but i would be lucky just to get 18 in the city if i drive it my way and no gunning it to just beat a red light.

Re: Stock MPG?
It sounds like a bunch of things that are going on.

Backfires can be caused by a lean condition. I wonder if you need a O2 sensor. The EGR valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) usually throws a code if it is not working. If your idle is really rough you may have a bad pcv valve. You can also give it a typical tune up by resetting the timing and new cap, wires etc...

My 1989 Formula 350 Convertible got 25.9 mpg highway from Asheville NC to Flint MI, non-stop, top up, no AC. averaged approx 5 over the speed limit.

Re: Stock MPG?
I know that when they put MTBE in the gasoline gas mileage dropped on my 84 when my dad was driving it. Prior to that he used to get 20-23. All the sudden he was getting 17-19, he found out by running out of gas before his normal fuel stop (used the mileage trip meter). No doubt the ethanol is not helping these days because anytime you add alcohol to gasoline its efficiency drops. My car when Dad was driving it was an L69/T-5/3.73 gears. Now with the LG4/L69 frankenstien motor I'm not sure what I'm getting. Haven't used a tank of gas yet due to teething problems and wanting to replace my weatherstripping.
