Too many choices

First off Hi everyone. I am new to the site as you can tell. Back in October ii Bought myself a 92 RS. It needs a little work here and there but not much. The guy who had it before me did some mods to it that I want to get rid of. I am looking to bring it back to original condition/less the disc brakes that I want to put on the rear end. Anyway, The grille insert that goes into the bumper cover, whats there is the grille with the two intakes and the fog lights. The fog lights are shattered and the grillr is broken. Is this the correct insert for my car? I do not have a fog light switch on the dash and from what I have been reading in the shop manuals, If you have fog lights you will have a switch. Seems to me the correct grille for my car would be the lovured one. Or am I not right with that either.

Re: Too many choices

AFAIK, The RS did not have fog lights. So in that respect, you should have the louvered grill on your 92.

Re: Too many choices

My 1992 RS did not have fog lights and had the louvered grill, however I am not sure if they where an option on the RS or not. I do know that at times the base models where available with fog lights, but not sure if that went away.

Re: Too many choices

Fog lights weren't an option on the RS. Originally it would have had the full louvered grill.

Don't get hung up on the fog lights or the disc brakes. The lights are mostly cosmetic, and probably not worth the trouble unless you really want the look. The disc brakes from 82-88 are junk and usually don't work as well as the stock drums for stopping the car. The 89-92 disc brakes are expensive and hard to find, and only work a little better then the drums.

Re: Too many choices

The fog lights were optional on the 87 LT. I've seen them on 85-86 base model Camaros and Berlinettas, but I couldn't tell you if they came that way.

Re: Too many choices

I can confirm i have an 86 base model camaro that has fog lights from the factory. Its got a louverd grill that has a opening for the fog lights. Also have a 85 Birlinetta also equiped with fog lights from the factory.

Re: Too many choices

Thank you for the help. Seems that everyone is split 50/50 on the yes no thing. I was almost sure that the fog lights were an add on that he did. I would love to keep them cause I think they give an added somthing to the car as well. However, at $185. a piece of them and a new grille I think I will go with the original louvered grille.. Besides I would hate to tap into the parking light wiring to hook them up.

Here's a price on both the lights and grill:

Re: Too many choices

Another option is to just buy the Z28 grill and not add the factory foglights. They look just fine without them, in fact some models got the Z28 grill and no fog lights.

Re: Too many choices

Go with whatever you like. To do it right with factory parts is expensive. Most of the time people just buy the grill and whatever cheap fog lights they find at Walmart or Western Auto, and it ends up looking cheap and hurried. Personally I'd rather see the standard non-fog light grill, then a fog light grill with no lights or the wrong lights.

Even when it's done properly, it's going to look a bit off to anyone that knows the RS wasn't offered with fog lights. But then someone might see it, and the next time someone else asks if the RS could be ordered with fog lights, they might say how they saw one and it sure looked factory, so it had to have come that way.

Re: Too many choices

I wouldn't say that, as much as when you see a lot of these cars, you become accustomed to the look. It's not hard to spot an RS from a Z28 or an Irocz from a distance. 1LEs didn't come with fog lights but the vast majority of Z28/Irocz Camaros did. So when you see a fog light grill with no fogs it looks wrong.
