Baffeled gas tanks

I know the baffeled tanks started on 1LE cars. Then I've read that all '90 and newer tpi cars camewith them, but I saw an article on this board that said B4C cars didn't get them. Is that true? I don't understand I guess why they wouldn't want a baffeled tank in a cop car. Of course I also want to know if my 91 formula or 92 B4C have them. Thanks for the help, Ryan.

Re: Baffeled gas tanks

My 91 3.1L Firebird had a baffled tank. If you want to know if a car has one, get it down to about 1/8th tank of gas and throw it around a corner under full throttle. If the engine coughs, sputters, almost dies, then it's a non baffled tank. I had a 89 RS L03 without the baffle and it was really annoying.

Re: Baffeled gas tanks

I am not sure what you mean by "baffled", but I am assuming you mean the plastic thing inside the tank?

My 1988 Camaro TPI came with baffled, but took it out cause it burned the baffled when welded the fitting on the tank.

I am not sure what other years that came with baffled?

Not sure, if this is really important to have one in the tank. I havent driven my yet without it.

See pics.

If I pitch my 87 IROC into a corner with less than a half take it starves. Wouldnt mind a baffled tank.

That looks to be part of the baffle, as you suspected. Here's some other pictures from others showing the baffle:

I've got no way of looking in the tank, but my 90 GTA starves for fuel big time when cornering hard with under 1/4 tank... I'm pretty sure there are no baffles.

Wow, that sucks... my 1990 Base Model Firebird does have a baffled tank. Maybe early vs late production.

Re: Baffeled gas tanks

Is there an rpo code for the tank? I'm guessing the Formula has one, because I autocross and track day the car, and it has never had any problems. But I haven't every really driven the Camaro that hard, there are a few things I want to fix before I try. Maybe I'll find out in the spring if there's no other way to tell without droping the tank. Re: Baffeled gas tanks

Somewhere in 91 GM had a rash of junk fuel tanks. Something about the filler neck welds are full of pin holes... Forget about getting a used one that's been sitting in a junkyard. New tanks aren't that expensive, you can get them from Advance Auto, or wherever.

In the documents that Leonard collected with the last 1992 Camaro built, there is a document from GM that states there was an issue with cracks or pin holes in the solder joint for the fuel neck of 1991 and 1992s.

Re: Baffeled gas tanks

yes there was a prob with the neck joint on some tanks but GM dealers had the vin listings 4 the recal. and honestly its not hard to re silver solder them.
I just found a replacement recal tank in the Junk yard..
they have a pressure tested GM sticker on them.
I paid 35 bux 4 tank and sending unit.. plus 7 gallons of gas 4 my lawn mower

Does anyone know where a baffled fuel tank can be picked up? No junk yards around me have them, and ive check summitracing and they only have non baffled fuel tanks.

My 92 RS tank was cracked at the neck so I got a new 1-piece baffled tank from Autozone.

Ok thanks for the info MGM RS, and just to make sure, is it this gas tank from autozone? http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...3593_127817_0_

I'd like to know because it says on the web page that it isn't baffled but i was hoping that was a typo.

What about the 4th gen tanks? For awhile everyone was swapping to plastic tanks out of fourth gens for weight savings as well as the baffles.

Will sending units on carbed models work on baffled tanks?

The only tanks I have seen the inside of were my stock 92 tank and the AZ tank I put in. They both had what I am sure was a baffle. Anyone have pics of the inside of a tank?

Thats weird wonder y that is? I just looked it up here at Napa and your right 14gal. Im sure most of the aftermarket tanks are Spectra brand. I think they are baffled replacements because I can rip around a corner pretty much sittin on E. Does anyone know if the aftermarkets are baffled for sure and why they hold less fuel.

Try contacting the manufacturer... How is any of us going to know why the aftermarket tanks are reportedly smaller capacity?

I would bet they are the same size, one is just factoring the volume differently. Inside measurement vs outisde, or something similer.

They have got to be the same. My Spectra looked just as good if not better than my 92 tank. It doesn't surprise me that AZ would have it listed incorrectly.

Re: Baffeled gas tanks

GM listed the capacity of the stock tank all over the place. The only logical theory is that the hardware inside the tank displaced different volumes of fuel on different cars. But, how much fuel does a plastic baffle or an in tank pump really displace? We know that the stock fuel tank itself was always the same size and same dimensions, but GM labeled them anywhere from 14.5 gallons to 16 gallons (18 if you count the 1LE rumor thats been disproven many times). I've owned a stack of thirdgens ranging from 83-late 91s and all held damn close to 16 gallons from bone dry (well past E).

I would assume that Spectra either calculated it differently (or wrong) or someone entered it into the catalog wrong. It's not just Autozone that says it's 14, but there's no telling where Spectra came up with that number.

I put a Spectra tank in a 5.0 Mustang a few years ago... It was almost identical to the stock tanks, just a little cheaper feeling. With a little tweaking it fit fine, and it worked fine. I would expect the same of their thirdgen tank.

Re: Baffeled gas tanks

My 1989 tank had pin holes at the filler neck. My whole garage stunk like gas every morning. The recall started in 1990, even though 1989 should have been included. So I got screwed.

I brought a new 1992 tank. You can call it baffles, but all it is, is a deeper cup, where the pickup sits.

I also brought a 1LE fuel sock, which is 2 sided. No more starvation. auto-x or road racing, perfect till the last drop.

Re: Baffeled gas tanks

I actually got it in pep boys! They had it in stock. the pep counter boy looked up fuel sock and 2 part #'s came up. one regular, and one performance. So I told him I want both. I compared them side by side. 1 was 2 sided, the other was single sided. WOW, a direct replacement. 2 sided means it picks up fuel from both directions.

Baffles, swingarm pick-up, and the sock were the difference in the 1le/r7u tanks. The arm would swing in the tank under hard cornering to keep the car from starving.

I believe that was advertising hype BS. I pulled down one 1LE tank. It was no different. They also advertised it was 18 gallons, and that was BS too.
