Camaro-The Third Generation Book 1981
Hi
Has anyone here heard of the book'Camaro-The Third Generation' by Michael Lamm? I have a genuine first edition/publishing here dated December 1981 and was wondering if anyone else had a copy or if this was a rare book?
Cheers

That is the first printing. It's not that rare. Printed in 1981, how much info about third gens can it contain? However, there is an edition printed in 1986 that contains more info. That is very hard to find, and can priced as high as $150.00, according to some knowledgeable board members.

Re: Camaro-The Third Generation Book 1981
I just bought a copy of Michael Lamm's "Camaro the Third Generation" (1987 third printing) copy last week on Amazon. It's a beat-up copy, but not missing any pages. It apparently came from the Mesa Junior H.S. library in Mesa, Arizona. Those kids really worked this book over. It was only $10.00 plus shipping and the only cheap one I have seen in ages. They are impossible to find at that price in good condition. If you get lucky and find one, buy it! They are usually over $100.00 if you can find it. This edition has a great section on the IROC-Zs that were actually used in the International Race Of Champions, how the bodies, frames, and running gear were built for the race. I also found 2 pages on the 1985 1C5 California Iroc-Z and why GM built them the way they did. It has lots of great pictures, many prototypes, and little known information in it!

I have a copy of the 1st edition, as well as a copy of the 3rd edition. Still haven't found a 2nd edition to add to my collection.
Both editions that I have are very good, but I prefer the 3rd over the 1st. Most of all though, learning the history behind the design as well as seeing the pics of all the concept versions is outstanding.

The copy I got is really beat-up but it is all there. I'll have my son scan the 2 pages on the 1C5 info and post it. There isn't much there. It's still better than nothing. This 1986 or 1987 third edition is an excellent one on the third gen Irocs. I also haven't seen the second edition. I wonder what's in it?

I've got the first edition in mint condition. I also have:
'Camaro Performance Handbook Performance Modifications for 1982-1992 Camaros' by David Shelby. 1993 publishing.
That is also a great book with some real good tips on modifying your 3rd gen!

That's the book I was talking about. It has the red convertible IROC-Z on the cover. That is a rare and valuable book in the condition yours must be in.
Re: Camaro-The Third Generation Book 1981
Shelby's book is REALLY dated. It's almost as humorous as the old catalogs I posted excerpts of the other day. Almost every aftermarket part he pictures in the book is discontinued. 'How to Tune & Modify Your Camaro 1982-1998' by Jason Scott is a much more in depth look at modifications and aftermarket parts. It's also a lot less dated for a book that's only 5 years newer. The Camaro Performance Handbook is more like a pamphlet then a book. Both books are the same price (or they were).

Re: Camaro-The Third Generation Book 1981
yo soy el warg,
Thanks for posting the two pages of Lamm's book on the Z5V thread. I responded there saying, IMHO, it was a misrepresentation of what a 1C5 California IROC-Z actually is. He didn't even get the first character of the RPO code right, calling it IC5. I'm quite sure he is passing off the picture of the white (or light colored production IROC-Z) without door decals as THE California IROC-Z. When I saw it last night, I remembered seeing it ten years ago, here. By now we all, especially 1C5 owners, know it is inacurate printed info.
Ideally, only info originated by GM would be deemed reliable, but that too seems elusive. Anyway, I'll make this short, since I am guilty of hijacking this thread.
In Jan '04, I was surfing IROCZONE, and noticed a thread begun by SilverBullet85, of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He asked if anyone had, or knew of anyone owning a California IROC-Z. After the usual questions/answers by other posters, there was an interesting post by a young man from California, posting by the name of IROCnDWORLD89, and I quote, "I have a GM ad from probably mid 1984,"(probably closer to 1985, I'll bet) advertising the IROC-Z as only in red and black with only 500 built. He quoted the ad as saying,
"For a limited time your California Chevrolet dealer can offer you a Camaro like no other. The famous IROC-Z distinctively and subtly styled into a sleek and stealthy package. Choose from two colors........black or red. Either color, this very special Camaro gets it's thunder from a 5.0 Tuned Port Fuel Injection engine. All the springs and shocks, sway bars, wheels and tires that make the IROC-Z a world class driving machine, make this limited edition version a car for the person who really loves driving. There will be 500 of these cars available, and they are available only at your California Chevrolet dealer. See him now while you can still chase your shadow."
500, not 502. Black, or Red, not yellow, or any other color. I asked if he could send me a scanned copy, and at the time he agreed. He never sent it, and after a couple more attempts, he ignored my requests, all together. One would think that this ad would surface somewhere, so that we could see it in actual print. As elusive as the one-armed man seen leaving the murder scene. How's that for dark & stormy?

I always appreciate your input on the 1C5 California IROC-Z. You're right about the misinformation that is out there. I also caught the errors that you did in those 2 pages. It didn't even mention the rear spoiler or hood louvers also being gone. I've gone through the same thing you have with people who have mentioned articles they've seen and information on the cars, but they never seem to follow through afterward and send me a scanned copy of their documentation after they've agreed to. Now that you've mentioned that there seems (considering the person has the right numbers and colors) to have been a genuine GM ad specifically for the 1C5, it gives me enough incentive to spend the $50 and have GM archives research the 1C5 California IROC-Zs since we've both come up empty everywhere else. I'll let you know how this turns out. Keep your fingers crossed that they have something.
Here's another "dark and stormy" in Lamm's third edition book on page 78. It tells of the elusive LG9, a revolutionary new design to bring about the revival of IROC racing. I wonder what rumors this will start, haha.
(Right-click and open in a new tab or window looks a lot better)

Yeah, good one! I've got the original 1985 Camaro brochure, too. That picture is page 4 & 5.
I contacted GM directly for 1C5 info, a few years back. They were very prompt with their response, "We are very sorry we couldn't find any information for your particular IROC-Z." It may depend on the individual doing the research. Keep trying, and let me (us) know what you come up with.

Re: Camaro-The Third Generation Book 1981
OMG!!!
I just got the book in the mail... it's near mint condition, and it's a first edition. I am going to absolutly LOVE reading through all the historical information on the 3rd gens, and looking at the hundreds of pics about the design of the car, assembly line photos, and a really in depth look at what went into designing every detail of the car
If you can find one of these books, PICK IT UP! every 3rd gen fan should have one
I showed it to my wife and told her the price I got it for, and she said "you didn't buy that, you STOLE it!"
awesome!
