assembly line messages written on car

so im parting out a 92 RS, car is stuffed hard in the front, cant be saved unfortunatly anyway i took the pass side rear ground effect off that goes on the bottom of the 1/4 panel and someone had written a message on it "last shot 5-18-92 2cd shift press 15" thought that was kinda cool, be funny to run across the person that wrote it.

Re: assembly line messages written on car

5-18-92 would be a few months prior to the last production. The last date the last Third Generation F-Body rolled off the Van Nuys assembly line was August 27, 1992. Leonard, a member here, has the very last Third Generation that rolled off the Van Nuys assembly line and he got to tour the plant and watch his car get built:

You could probably enter the VIN into the following website and get a rough date:

A few months before last production of the car, but I suppose it's possible that it could have been last production of the part.

says only 92 cars with same options, how do i tell what production number the vehicle is. i know the build date is 6-15-92 so its no where near the end of the run but still interesting.

Re: assembly line messages written on car

Maybe it was the last part stamped in that press - even though it was a few months before the end of production, I would think that they would stamp out parts far ahead of time, and just stockpile them for use on the line. Especially in 92, in order to make more time to retool for the 4th gens.

What color is the car? Might be the last time they shot that color?

Re: assembly line messages written on car

the ground effects in the back are polyurethane and were molded. A molding term is a "shot", the injection molding machine or "press" "shoots" resin into the mold, mold opens and part drops out. That could have been the last shot for those parts, meeting the stock level maybe? Could also be the stamping press too as mentioned. Either way, pretty cool.

Hello Ward!!

I don't think that they would have to worry about re-tooling at the Van Nuys plant for the 4th gen Camaro. All fourth gen Camaros, and Firebirds were built at the Ste-Therese GM plant north of Montreal Quebec, Canada!!

If you doubt that, I challenge you to find a factory built fourth gen Camaro/Firebird with a VIN that begins with a 1 instead of a 2!!

You won't find it, and so that you know, 1 denotes built in the US, while 2 denotes built in Canada!!

Since when are parts produced at the final assembly plants?

If the subcontractor had to tool up for another part at their plant for another car line, company, etc., it is totally feasible to have stockpiled and stopped production on the current part.

Hello simo!!

Parts, as far as I know, aren't made at the final assembly plant, but rather trucked in on a "just in time" basis from the sub-contractors!!

I was just commenting on Ward's "re-tooling" comment, taking it to mean that the final assembly plant had to "re-tool", which wouldn't be in this case, as the fourth gen was made at a totally different plant!!!

Correct, I think we are now all on the same page.

You are right about on the "just in time" basis on bringing in the parts as they are needed for the plants particular production time line. No need taking up unnecessary floor/storage space.

Re: assembly line messages written on car

i used to run an enjection molding machine and it wasnt uncommon to produce any were from 50 to 65 parts per hour so yes stockpiling is a comon practice were molded and or pressed parts are made.....whether its automotive or otherwise.....i remember i set a new production record on my machine of 67 shots per hour...(shots not parts because each shot made two identicle parts). and that was a small company subcontracting for kenmore....
