Subframe problems

I have found that the sub frame on my Trans Am has rusted quite a lot. Is there an aftermarket sub frame replacement or is fabrication the only way to fix the problem.

Re: Subframe problems

I've never seen an aftermarket subframe repop, so regardless of what rust you do have? A custom rebuild is most likely your only choice. The question is though.....How far gone is it? And how much will have to be rebuilt?

Re: Subframe problems

Stephen, my thought was that when someone says "subframe" they may very well mean floorboard, rocker panel, or even lower radiator support. As you said, it could be one small region that can be repaired, or at the point where the car is a lost cause. I've seen theads totally change direction once pictures are introduced, so why not just cut to the pictures so we can give better advice.

This is a good idea right here. Now I have seen much of the sub-frame totally replaced through custom fabrication. You may also be able to find a car that's pretty well trashed with an intact sub-frame. You can move over the parts you need but you'll either need mad welding skills or you'll have to spend a ton of money at the body shop to fix it.

Re: Subframe problems

I will try to get pics, but am using as a daily drive at the moment. I can say this though 2-3 inches ahead of the connection for the rear control arm on the driver's side was rusted so bad that you could stick your finger in one side and out the other. Welded some new metal in to that area for now but not gonna hold for long I don't think.

Re: Subframe problems

I've seen new subframes custom fabricated, so I know it can be done.
