87 Trans Am 5 speed farm find

Hey guys. My bro told me he was at his freinds farm and passing by one of the barns noticed a firebird sitting there. His freind had no idea it was even there, since he's not too car smart. I went back with my brother to look at it and to my surprise, it's an 87 Trans Am 5 speed with the 305 H.O. engine. T-tops & power everything! Upon inspecting it quickly, it looks like the body is solid but being in new england behind a barn outside, I can only image it's got to have rust somewhere. Interior is 100% there but the dash is cracked real bad. Car is dark blue with silver ground effects and has a gray interior. Unfortunately theres a big dent in the rear quarter panel too but the rest of the body is straight. It's also got the SLP dual outlets on one side exhaust on it and it looks mint. I'm going to have the kid ask his father and see who's it is or where it came from and if he'd possibly sell it to me for 400 or 500 bucks. If so, depending on the condition, I'll either fix it up or maybe part it out. I'm actually hoping it's in good shape so I can fix her up though! Would be cool to have an original 5 speed TA. Anyways, I'll let you guys know what happens.

Must be cool to find such cars in farms...here we get boring Renault 4

The 5.0L HO was discontinued after 1986, and that year only 26 T/A were built with that engine. No way this 87 has a 5.0L HO, but it can be an LG4 if it's carbed (last year for the LG4).

Re: 87 Trans Am 5 speed farm find

I believe if he's repeated that after reading it on the side skirts, it may be referencing the 5.0L TPI. I believe '88 started saying "Tuned Port Injection," but if i'm not mistaken, '87 had H.O. as TPI in oil filter books is even referenced as a 5.0L HO as apposed to the TBI motors being referenced as a simple 5.0L.

Re: 87 Trans Am 5 speed farm find

From what I remembered, I thought it said "5.0 Liter HO" under the fender vent but I could be mistaken. I will check it out this weekend again and take some pics. The car is deffinately a little rough, but if the body and floors are solid, I'd love to fix it up and give it a quick re-spray since I paint in my garage. And I am not 100% positive it's an 87 but it looks like it.

My brother had the IDENTICLE car, same color and all, just not a 5 speed and it was an 87. I'll find out the details soon enough.

Re: 87 Trans Am 5 speed farm find

Here's a way I use to figure out a year. Look at the 3rd brake light. If it is sticking out of the top of the hatch, then it's a 85-86. If the 3rd brake light is in between the hatch plate and the spoiler, then it's a 87-89.

Thats ussually how I tell, since I own an 86, lol. The brake light is under the wrap around spoiler so I know it's at least an 87. I'm going to see about grabbing the keys from the kids father so I can check it out a little better since when I saw it it was all locked up. Thats the reason I have no clue on the motor too, and I forgot to look at the vin!

I actually have grown to like my third brake light at the top of the window. I think it adds character and says that the car is hands down an 86! I am repainting the car and thought about going with a newer hatch, but I can't do it. I'm keeping the original.
