The fifth digit is S. The decoders list that as berlinetta. Is my car a clone or is there something I don't know.

A Z28 would have been "P" for that year.

Do you have the RPO sticker in the console?

Some decoders will crunch the check digit and tell you if the VIN is valid. That's one way you can verify that you're reading the VIN correctly. If the 5th digit is really a S, then the car is a Berlinetta. You could look for other VIN's on the car, you might be able to find a partial VIN that may help you verify what you have. Really if you strip a Z28 to the shell, and a Berlinetta to the shell, you can build both cars up to be like the other with the right parts. You can look for parts that indicate it's one or the other, but they aren't concrete. Much the same, the console cover/armrest could have been swapped.

what was all the difference in the 2 cars that year could you get the lu5 motor in both

The LU5 was Z28 only. Z28 also had 15" aluminum wheels, scooped hood, black horizontal striped tail lights, ground effects, leather steering wheel, shifter, e-brake handle, and full analog instrumentation.

The Berlinetta had standard gold trim (Gold Berlinetta emblems, gold horizontal striped tail lights, Gold 14x7 aluminum wheels), V6 or 305 4bbl engine, no ground effects, plastic steering wheel, shift ****, ebrake handle, and digital instruments with a pillar mounted cassette radio. It also had some other stuff that was unique to the Berlinetta, but I'm not sure it's worth mentioning.

check the tag right in front of the radiator, it will say Z28 right there if it is one

They look a little odd at first, but the look grows on you. You might have to own one to appreciate it. A mean 82-87 Camaro coupe or a Firebird Formula just has a look that means business.

Be sure to get the VIN from the tag at the windshield. Special rivits are used on VIN tags at the factory so fakes (swapped VIN tags) are easier to spot. If there's an 'S" than it's a Berlinetta.

Found out the vin on my car is a P. Its a Z28 afterall. I was using my insurance card to check the vin. Turns out they had the VIN wrong. Thank God!!!!! I own a Z28!!
