wasnt there a red one also ? but i think it got sent to the crusher
Re: 1985 Trans-Am Prototype Kammback Concept
GM has been trying to ram that station wagon hatch down someone's throat for years. It started in the second gens, and found it's way onto a few third gens, and was even used on at least one fourth gen (Hurst Hauler). Damn thing is ugly as sin.
The red car is a 86-ish Trans Am with GTA badging, TPI, and Recaro seats. Do a Google image search for Kammback and there are several pics of it out there.
I would really have to question why the interior of this car is different from stock. It doesn't make a lot of sense why Pontiac would throw together a mismatched leather interior with a different steering wheel.

I dunno, some wood panelling on the sides and a board rack on the roof would work for me...........

Re: 1985 Trans-Am Prototype Kammback Concept
When you stop to think about it the third gen version is just a different hatch. Like a reverse notchback, but the second gen is a lot of bodywork. Also I love how the second gen opens on the side and not the back LOL.
Re: 1985 Trans-Am Prototype Kammback Concept
The red one was sold at a BJ auction in 2009:

By the way, last I checked, the white car that Alex (92GTA) linked to had an asking price of 60K in May of this year by the same dealer. I assume it still has not found a buyer.

Re: 1985 Trans-Am Prototype Kammback Concept
Isn't it scary that someone at GM must have sat at their desk like an evil genius, with just one thought in their microscopic little mind: Build Kammbacks!
I can understand building one as a concept, but to keep building them again and again as concept vehicles knowing full well that it wasn't going to ever be built. It's like it got to be a bad joke...

Somebody probably said the same thing the first time somebody mocked up a CTS station wagon.

Re: 1985 Trans-Am Prototype Kammback Concept
I remember seeing the 2nd gen Firebird in MotorTrend or some other mag back in the 70's and thinking that they looked pretty cool. But that yellow 2nd gen Camaro looks baaaaaaaad! and I love the second gen Camaros. Maybe if they had used a Z/28 or Rally Sport it would look better. But like someone else said, why continue with the idea when you know it will never be done. Of course the Aztec was sombody's hair-brained idea too and it made it out the door.

Dead thread, I know, but dang, I still love the third-gen version. Never knew about the black / silver version before now, But it should have gone into production. I don't like the other generations as Kammbacks.

Re: 1985 Trans-Am Prototype Kammback Concept
To add to the conversation (I know I know not 3rd gen related) but there was a Kammback Corvette based on the 68-82 Vette... Oddly enough I actually saw the car driving down the Road in my home town going to the Mall... There was a model kit of it as well back in the day.
The most striking thing that I remember was it had 4 or 6 rectangular tail lights rather than the normal round tailights... Can't find a pic of it yet tho.

Re: 1985 Trans-Am Prototype Kammback Concept
After reading the article from Jim Mattison, I am not entirely convinced that was the whole story on all of them. These are the cars that there are pictures of:
1) The White one in question with the letter from Jim.
2) There was a Red one at the Trans Am Nationals (As seen in post 14)
3) A Blue one that was disposed of.
4) The Black and Silver one in the magazine article.
What Am I missing, was there really 3 and one had been repainted? what gives?
John
