$200 Camaro project - progress
This is my first post, so I figure I should show all of you the reason I am here. I bought this 88 5.0 TBI for $200 from someone I work with, it needed a water pump, fuel pump and fan switch just to get it driving daily. it had an exhaust leak so I just put headers on it, now I am waiting to buy the Y-pipe, since I have until March before all the snow melts I have plenty of time.
The first day I got it.

The new tires on it.

Home after pulling it in from the rain

Parts car, 89 paid $600, came with spare transmission as well as a new glass pack muffler...had a 383, bought it from my neighbor, previous owner didn't disclose to my neighbor it had a blown engine. I would have just put an engine in this car, but it has a major rat nest for wiring, plus the rear end has a bit of rust in it.

Re: $200 Camaro project - progress

Both torn down

fenders and door back on

Still have a bit of alignment to do on the front clip

The engine wiring still need to be cleaned up, this was just to make sure I had it together right so I could start it for a second. Oh and that is Edelbrock in the back ground. He loves to help.

No offense man but why you would part that black camaro out for that red one is beyond me. The black one actually looks pretty sharp as it sits and if you carbed it there really wouldn't be any wiring to be done.
Otherwise it looks like its coming along pretty well, good luck

Re: $200 Camaro project - progress
I wasn't a fan of the rattle can black one, the person who had it before me had done some crazy stuff, it looked like the guy jumped the car or something lol, the whole underside is beat to hell and rusted like crazy as in it would never hold a spare tire...a minnesota car...he rattle canned it to hide something I would guess.. the front end was still in good condition and that's what i needed. I would still consider making it a carbed car, but I wanted the other one done first.

You should really get to work on cleaning up the engine bay and engine and that would make the car look and feel alot nicer.

The odometer says 69K, I am assuming 169K but I can't be sure, the engine as far as oil leaking, there really is none, and it doesn't burn any oil between oil changes. The black one says 80K on the odometer.

Re: $200 Camaro project - progress
So here's an update, I bought some tan leather seats from Hawks. Luckily my parts car has tan interior, the seats should be here next week so Here is the progress on the interior...I hope to have the tan interior minus seats in tomorrow.

I wasn't able to get the carpet out of the other car yet, mainly because it was 17 degrees and the sun was going down and I didn't want to freeze with my feet in the snow trying to get it all out tonight. So this is as far as I got tonight.

I was rather surprised to find no rust at all during this tear down, The only rust I have found on the car so far was the drivers door which I replaced and the right rear wheel well, but that is just surface rust....

Re: $200 Camaro project - progress
way to go and good for you
I'm doing an 89 and I paid $500 but it had new tires, brakes and is a Florida car............no rust. I've already done the interior and the engine just went out for rebuild and the tranny is going tomorrow.
I couldn't see putting all the labor and money into it without bringing the drivetrain up to rebuilt status.
You might want to invest in new bushings.

Re: $200 Camaro project - progress
Before you put your interior back in I'd put some paint or bed liner on the floors of the car, then I'd put some sound deadener over it. A little extra protection can't hurt, especially with these cars.

Re: $200 Camaro project - progress
I probably wont be doing that. The car doesn't see any of the winter time around here and is stored in the garage at all times. it is actually not very loud in the cab anyways.

Re: $200 Camaro project - progress
Found these in the parts car, good thing too as one of mine was blown

Carpet and center console in, just missing two back trim pieces

I will shampoo the carpet when there isn't a chance of it freezing in my garage, but for now all I am waiting for are my seats, which hopefully will be here next week.

I had almost the exact same speakers in the back of my Camaro. Looking pretty good so far! Are you going to refinish the steering wheel?

Re: $200 Camaro project - progress
yeah, I was planning on putting in another steering wheel I just haven't decided which one, I kind of like the 4th gen ones but finding one at a reasonable price is the problem. I was also thinking of a grant steering wheel, but I am still up in the air about it. I don't need it anytime soon since there is three feet of snow on the ground behind it lol...and I think those speakers are JVC or Jensen, I am not sure, but they were free and sound a lot better than my old ones lol.

Re: $200 Camaro project - progress
Not currently, I have been driving it on nice days, I will be putting it into primer in the next couple months, and I will be updating as I do that. Also I may have a line on another 305, so I may get the other one back on the road. The plan is to paint the current running one Maroon, and the black one orange with black wheels, but that is subject to change depending on how the paint turns out on the maroon one. Thanks for your interest!
