Missing a lot of Bolts!
Missing a lot of Bolts!
I took apart an entire 91 Camaro that was out of shape and nothing was good on it. EVERYTHING is taken apart and now the Camaro is naked with not a single bolt on it (just the frame and a pile of parts, not even an engine). Some how all the bolts and washers got mixed up and misplaced and now EVERY single bolt, nut, washer of the entire Camaro is sitting in one bucket. Basically this is a nightmare. I was wondering how I could order individual bolts for parts or buy an entire bolt kit. I did get some bolts from junkyards but that not going to well. I searched everywhere trying to find bolts!!!

Re: Missing a lot of Bolts!
you wont kind a kit, just wont happen.
suspension/chassis bolt kits are available from places like Spohn performance, and I think UMI has a bunch too.
the rest you kinda have to order seperatly and figure out what size. most if not all the body bolts are metric. 8mm 1.5 and 10mm 1.5 in various length are very commont throughout the car. If you have everything is a bucket, you can find the bolts that fit, them use them to measure for new ones if you so desire.
McmasterCarr has just about every bolt imaginable. Im sure there are other places, but those guys are really close to me and i use them alot. (shipping gets here in 1 day)

Years ago I took apart a Porsche 930 Turbo's interior to restore it and luckily bagged and tagged every nut and screw so that 2 years later it was relatively easy to put back together (I did this because I feared the exact same situation you are in).
This may be one of those times in life when you learn a lesson on what not to do.

That sucks. I use zip lock bags and label everything small/bolts, ect... as well as I use a notebook to take notes/diagrams as I rip things apart. Most importantly I keep stuff(small parts and notes) locked up in cabinets so the kids can't get into it...............

It's not that hard to get the correct bolts in the correct places, I had all the bolts of my 87 camaro in a bucketm now my 82 trans am is apart w/ all the bolts in 1 bucket

Re: Missing a lot of Bolts!
Oh yeah? and why would that be?
I've always done it like that, 82 vette, 77 vette, 63 vette, 79 trans am, 79 Z28, 82 trans am, 87 camaro. All completely apart, all bolts in a large bucket and off to the platers. A little common sense, reading the grades on the bolt heads and it should not be a real big issue. It helps sorting bolts by matching ones.
My cars don't rattle or squeek, in fact my camaro is 10 times tighter now than it was before

i'm a retired milatary & civilian acft. mechanic . one of the first things i learned was "bag & tag" when you do any kind of repair . this practice has served me well over the years . i first started on acft. maint. in 1956 , (before most of yall were born) . any way practice my procedure on all your repairs . things will go much better . it's a simple & easy thing to do . too bad you screwed up on your project , but you did learn . good luck in the future .

I used a rubber maid bin that had a lid.. Any cars I stripped, bolts went in.. It's a great thing to keep around..

Re: Missing a lot of Bolts!
Rather than tell you what you did wrong, thing to do would be to sort through the bucket and arrange by size, length, strength, etc. From there, a trip to the wreckers or looking at photos on this site or others should start to put some order into it.
For example, 7mm seems to be the size for most interior bolt/screws around the dash. Underhood range from 10 mm at the radiator supports and front effects (for Firebirds) to 13 mm for bumper covers.
Hope that helps.

Re: Missing a lot of Bolts!
Alright, I matched and organized all the bolts and bagged them. I'm having a problem with finding the bolt to the gas tank strap, can someone show me a picture of what that bolt would look like for a 1991 Camaro RS?

Other GM models used an M10 x 1.5 x 30 or 35mm w/ 15mm head. Don't quote me on that.
