engine color on '82's

I talked to a guy yesterday who was the original owner of a '82 Z28, he said it was built on the last days of '82 production. He said the engine was painted black and not blue. Does anyone know when the color change took place? I thought all '82 engines were blue. thanks, Chris

Can't comment with a correct answer as I also thought all 82s were blue.

yes, mid 82 is the switchover from blue to black. Same in the corvettes, I have an 82 w/ a black engine, late production, buddy has an early one w/ blue engine. Both were all original.

They must have been pretty late in the year, I had a '82 pace car built in April '82 and that engine was blue. '82 Production ran a little longer into September, so maybe sometime in the late summer of '82?

My 1982 TA has the block and heads painted blue, but the valve covers are black. It is a crossfire so I don't know if the valve covers were supposed to match the air cleaner though.

Re: engine color on '82's

my 82 Van Nuys, Trans Am with Crossfire was build on the second to last day of production and it as a blue engine.

It might depend on the where the engine came from and what was in stock at build time.

Hmm, maybe only the vettes got the black engines? Mine is 23904 out of 25407, it had a black engine. I know of a couple more that did, my buddy has an 82 with a blue engine. His is an early prod. number
