Dealer ordered 427 third gen??
Dealer ordered 427 third gen??
Just bought a 84 camaro today. Says z28. Was decoding the rpo and there it was "L88" it also said dealer ordered. It was blue metallic with "bright white wheels" was there ever a 427 third gen? Or does l88 have other meanings then just 427? Fill me in on what I have...

Not sure but I input l88 in my rpo decoder and it dint pull anything up
Re: Dealer ordered 427 third gen??
How about you provide a copy of the RPO sheet. The 427 was not available in any factory produced Camaro in the 3rd gen years. Please provide us more details. Thanks

Re: Dealer ordered 427 third gen??
No way.
Last year of the 427 was 69 AFAIK. 66 - 69 doesn't overlap 3rd gen production.
Car mfrs are required to have all engine/trans combos tested by the EPA for emissions compliance. This is the REAL reason why, for example, there's no 350/T-5 combo; it wouldn't pass the mfr-level smog certification (too much HC & CO letting off the gas between shifts). No way GM would have had ONE car certified with a motor 15 years obsolete.
Sounds like a mis-reading or mis-interpretation of something.
Post the 1st 10 of the VIN; it'll be obvious what it came with.
Similarly, there were no "bright white" wheels on 84 Z28s. They were either silver or gold.
Altogether, a case of "code abuse".
Feel free to tell us where you got these codes from.

I'm trying to find my old 1987 RPO book but can't remember where it is. Doing a search comes up with 2.3L, MFI, TURBO, DOHC.
LS6 was a 2.5L, if I remember right. GM recycles RPO's all the time. But there was no L88 in 84, at least on the F-Body.

I bet what you really saw was LB8, and either your 84 is actually an 85+ and Z28 appears on the outside of the car but not on the RPO list at all, or the VIN on the RPO list doesn't match the VIN of the car.

Half the fun of the car hobby is listening to stories presented by the casual, gullable, and misinformed participant.
Like an 84 L88 Camaro.
Or an 88 IROC 350 5 speed.
Or an 02 SS LS6.
These bull stories are best enjoyed when they are delivered with a high level of confidence.
