1986 Trans Am questions?
1986 Trans Am questions?
I have an 1986 Trans Am, as far as I can tell, it is a ws6, no RPO codes in the center console. It has 36 mm front and 24 mm rear sway bars, factory rear disc, factory digital dash, which I need to find parts for if anybody can be of help. The lcd for the tach is cracked and the buttons on the computer are pressed in or missing contacts. It also has factory cross lace wheels, and it 'had' the factory premium sound which all the speakers were blown, including the factory 4" subs in the wing pillars and is also missing the factory amp, the wiring is there, but it looks to be torn out. Any info and help for finding some for the replacement dash parts would be awesome.

With the rear disc brakes and other items you mention it does sound like it is a WS6. The amplifier that is used for the Performance Sound option is the same amplifier that was used in some Cadilliacs and are available from many radio repair shops for around $100.00. I have a working Performance Sound system in my 86, and to be honest the only reason that I am keeping the thing is because my car is 100% stock, has 29K miles on it, and shows in the stock class. If I were building a street rod, I would go aftermarket. My car is mostly a trailer queen, not a daily driver, and the OEM stereo is not that great even when it is working. It is cool novelty at the car shows! Try Kee Audio for a nice set of speakers that will replace the OEMs and are bolt in. Make sure that you tell Ian that you have the separate subwoofers. Ian is an F-body fan, and has lots of cool items/knowledge about these cars.Post some pics of your car.

I have an 86 that I ordered new with every option available and I do not recall a digital dash being available in this year?
Was this a mid year option?

Are you sure about the digital cluster only being available late 1986? My 1985 Firebird GM shop manual has a section for the electronic digital cluster (troubleshooting and wiring). Additionally, the GM parts illustration book has a part number for the electronic digital cluster for 1985. That said, I can't say I've seen one in 1985. I do know the 1986s are different from 1987-1988 because the tachometer is slightly different:

Meanwhile, I have never seen an '85 with one, either, and seeing as how the Firebird Red Book is worthless...the world may never know...

Re: 1986 Trans Am questions?
They mixed and matched a lot of stuff from year to year. My 86 was built in July 86. It also came with the cross lace wheels. The engine is the 86 version, but has the 87 style fan belt and hose configuration. It has the serpentene belt and two v-belts, and the 86 stuff does not fit. There are some other minor parts that are also 87, which makes trying to find parts a whole lot of fun... When the altentator failed a couple of years ago every part listed in the NAPA computers was incorrect. There was one parts man that knew the altenator by sight and found the correct one for the car. I still don't know what car it is supposed to fit.

I heard about the digital dash being available on 86's, but have never seen one. Before that, I was under the impression that it was ONLY available on early (87-89 or so) GTA's.
As far as Berlinetta's go, I'm pretty sure you could get the digidash from 84-86.

Re: 1986 Trans Am questions?
Just to note, the digital cluster in the Berlinetta is completely different from the digital cluster that was optional on the Trans AM and GTAs.
