0482 special edition 87 convertable

hi new owner of a 87 convertible
This is what the former owner had on craigslist when I bought the car
The 0482 edition is a 2.8 L engine made and sold only in California. This is a Palm Springs California car. Anyone know anything about the 0482 special edition?? There is no 20TH anniversary edition emblem on the dash instead it had 0482 special edition ?? Anyone heard of this thanks

The car you are describing is not a factory convertible, therefor it will not have the 20th anniversary logo on the glove box. all factory built convertibles were V8's. do you have any pictures?

Re: 0482 special edition 87 convertable

Ok I'm shooting from the hip here, so don't jump all over me if I'm not remembering correctly... BUT, if I remember correctly... Factory 87 convertibles got the map pocket with 20th anniversary special edition, and ASC converted 87's got the emblem. If that's the case, your VIN number should say the car is a hardtop. If it's a factory convertible the VIN will show it as a convertible.

Do a search for posts by Willie and you can probably find more info on the subject.

However on these cars, ASC did serialize their cars and added their own emblem directly under the factory emblem (pic below).

And the usual 'factory' installed map pocket..

Re: 0482 special edition 87 convertable

Thanks Drew this appears to clear up some confusion about the car the sixth digit of the vin is 2 so I think it left the factory as a t-top model. The car came from California it's now in Upper Michigan where it will be stored from about November to April. It's very clean and rust free with very few modifications . But it is a v6!! I don't know if I should try to make it back to an original or v8 it and make a hot rod out of it??? Any suggestions THANKS Bryan

You could probably do whatever you want with it as it's only a special edition because that's what ASC labeled the non factory conversions. The hardware is identical to the factory conversions, so there will be no discrepancy there, but the VIN 2 just shows it as a coupe with aftermarket changes. Most aftermarket changes don't do much for value unless it's a performance/speed upgrade.

I would say do what you want with it. If mine wasn't a 20th Anniversary car, I would be doing a number of mods to it. Installing a Magnaflow exhaust is the only non factory part I added. Having a quiet V8 car just didn't feel right.

Re: 0482 special edition 87 convertable

V6 thirdgens are pretty much worthless. The soft top makes it a bit more desireable, but still somewhere lower then a V8 ttop car. Swapping to a V8 would increase the value if it's done correctly. Of course that's another problem, almost everything is different between a V6 and a V8. You'll throw away as many parts swapping to a gen I V8 as you would swapping in an LS1. If the V6 runs fine, I'd probably just leave it alone and cruise it. Convertibles aren't about going fast anyway. Keep in mind that the top of the line V8 convertibles were still neutered compared to a G92 hardtop, none of them were fast.

Your probably right ill just cruise until the little 6 gives out then how knows. The last camaro I had was a 2000 ss t-top stick so I guess I shouldn't compare the two!! That one cost a little more than the $1,700 I have in this one!!!

It looks like a nice car, and you're definitely into it right. A few little details like swapping back to a stock antenna, and less dated wheels would make it look even that much cleaner. You're probably not going to see another one driving around town everyday. If/when you want to make the car faster, there are always options.

Re: 0482 special edition 87 convertable

There are very few 1985's but several 1986's and more 1987 Camaros that were converted by ASC for dealerships. Firebirds there are about 600 non factory verts made between 1986-1989. AFAIK, there were very very few cars that might have possibly been converted for individuals.

The nice thing about the ASC conversions is they are identical to the "Factory" model for the same given year, So if you ever need parts, any 1987 vert part should interchange.

More or less the special parts on 1986's and 1987's are the same, most of 1988 parts are also the same the rear spoiler changed for the Camaro Vert slightly due to a redesigned third brake light.

IMHO, ASC (conversion) verts are a partial tick below the desirability of a Factory vert and a tick above a T-top car. The biggest detractor to any conversion car is the lack of parts and pieces to bring them back to original or simply repair them... seeing that this is not an issue with these cars since all parts are the same as a factory car that is why I had not qualms with buying my car...
