How much is a Third Gen worth.
How much is a Third Gen worth.
I've noticed that this question comes into play a lot. So my question is this and goes out to all. If you were going to buy your Third Gen today. How much would you pay for it.I want to know about the one's you have. Not the one you may be looking at buying. Also not how much you gave for it when you got it.But the way it is now.
I know this may not be where this goes how ever I wasn't sure where it may have been better placed.
Let's here it.

That's too general a question. There are too many variables. Is it low mileage, special edition, such a 1LE or TTA? Is it original, or high mileage? Does it need work? V6, or V8? etc.

Re: How much is a Third Gen worth.
I've been looking at this type of question a lot lately because I've wanted to buy a project to fix up, drive a little, and then sell for a little profit. THinking buy for $2k, fix drive and sell for around $4500. ...and the cars with cheap and quick fix-up problems are plentiful. The problem is selling them. My Iroc is pretty darn clean, and I bought it in 98 as a super clean 70k mile car for $6800. ...but back in 98, you could appeal to any younger guy and them may very well have been interested in that car. Nowadays, the same car, a clean, stock 89 Iroc/L98 isn't gonna get $6800. It's not the car, is the economics. Younger guys aren't buying Irocs. (or thirdgens). I would say that if you're looking for a project car, then sure, there are plenty of good deals, but someone looking for a good clean, ready to drive car? Nope. The demand just isn't out there.
....now if you have the time to sit on the car, and keep it for sale for 12 to 18 months, then yeah, it's different. You'll eventually find that guy who IS looking for your very car. ...and then yes, value is a whole different issue. But you gotta be willing to be patient and wait. These are now collector cars, race cars, project cars, etc. etc. but no longer just everyday daily driver cars. The market has changed.

Its going to take longer than 12-18 months for aveage people to get back into cars. ESP with gas prices projected to be hitting over $5 a gallon this summer.
Its just going to keep the economy in the tank...
With that, they value from free, all the way to over 100,000K for some of the Hawks and about 3 of the TTA verts, even in this economy.

Re: How much is a Third Gen worth.
The "average person" will never get back into Thirdgens. That's the point. It's now a niche market. The economy sure doesn't help, but even if gas was free, the average person still doesn't want a thirdgen. Even the newest 4th gen is now 10 years old.

Very true..
We are on the way out like the model Ts and As. Remember when they brought big bux? You can pic up a restored one for next to nothing. All the guys that owned them or wanted to own em are gone or close.. prices are droppn fast.

Re: How much is a Third Gen worth.
People who were born in the 70's and grew up in the 80's are going to be the biggest buyers of third gens, in another 20 years or so (when they have more $$) they're gonna want to recapture some of their youth. Same thing happened with the first gens.
I just had my car in the shop, and when I went back to pick it up my mechanic said "I've had lots of people asking me about your car, the people that KNOW cars". I gotta say, I was kinda surprised.

Re: How much is a Third Gen worth.
I think you are wrong. In addition to Camaros, I have 5 Model A's.....if the prices in your area are dropping fast, let me in on them because I want to buy them. A driver Model A will still bring $10,000 - $20,000. Fresh restoration cars will bring from $15,000 - $25,000 and the Cabriolets and A-400s up to $50,000. Find me an A-400 for $1,000 and I will be a happy man!!

I'm saying the 3rds are starting the long journy to a place where those Ts-As are today. Almost the bottom of the value chart
The Ts-As have really dropped in price over the last 10-20 years is what Im saying. If you spend 20-30K on a restoration now and end with a car that goes 10-20K (if your lucky) I'm thinking thats not good. Like the 3rds, you have to want to do it..
I honestly don't see them going up from where they are now.. Sure there will be a few of them buuut.
My great uncle owns a old 1 door ford, I forget exactly what model it is but its fun to ride in, hard to drive.

Re: How much is a Third Gen worth.
From 1982 until present day, thirdgens have been sold in the following range:
Low: Price of scrap metal
High: $59k at Barrett Jackson (unless someone knows of a higher priced exchange)
I'd say $6-10k for a mechanically perfect driver quality car with high miles, the options I want, and average desirability (no rare stuff like 1LE etc.) is fair.
$10-30k should net a show quality survivor or restoration with full documentation, desirable and possibly rare options (1LE, TTA, B4C, odd color combos, etc.), and low miles, with very low miles in the higher range.
$40k and above is just absurd. We're talking under 1000 miles TTAs, 1LEs, Firehawks in original wrapper. Or we're talking two guys fighting over the same car at an auction. Or someone who saw thirdgen and thought they said "firstgen"

Re: How much is a Third Gen worth.
I'd pay 4 grand for a nice, well-optioned, medium miled driver car. The really nice, really low mile cars would end up being garage queens and I have no use for that. I will let people with more restraint buy up and preserve the garage queens. Someone's gotta do it and I love em for it, but it aint me.

A base bird or camaro are around scrap price compared to those..
Re: How much is a Third Gen worth.
My question was how much you would pay for your current Third Gen in its current state.
So i think the title is good.My goal is so when others check out this thread in
the years ahead they can get a good idea of what we thaught was a good price for our cars or at least what we were willing to pay.So post a pic with your post.

Even my car being what it is....a plain camaro with IROC trim is worth atleast 5k around here just because the car has been taken care of and is in really good shape.
