'89 Iroc Z

Hey forum fam,
I'm pretty stoked today that I just picked up a 89 Iroc Z28. Bright Red, T Top, 5.0 auto car with what I think would be the basic Z options(leather wrapped steering wheel and shifter, window tint, cruise ctrl, FE2 susp, G80-2.73 drum rear, power locks, electric hatch release, 15" wheels, etc. all for the low, low price of $1,500. Odometer reads 10K but don't know if it's 110k or 210K.

Paint is almost fair, body is straight with little bondo on driver door and almost everything works down to the secondary fan. Drivetrain ran good for the 120 mile ride home. Not sure how it did on mpg's since the gage stays pinned at "F"(maybe a sticky float in tank) but definitely in need of a major tune up.

Anyway, having a 5.0/5sp I always thought an auto car would be boring but this one surprised me. Smooth shifts, acceleration and decent power almost making it a preferred daily driver.

Enough rambling, considering all of the above, i'm still kind of bummed that it's not a G92 car with dual cats but it's still a steal and couldn't pass up the deal.

One thing that I thought was out of place was the 115mph, 5k readline cluster. Is this right and were the G92 cars the only Z's to get the 145 mph, 5500 redline cluster?

Will post some pics of the rare find tomorrow.

thanks in advance.

The 5500 redline tach came on LB9s with the bigger cam, those being all '85 LB9s and '87 and up 5 speed LB9s.

Re: '89 Iroc Z

i suppose that explains the almost night and day difference between this and my '92 5.0/T5.
Considering that, I won't feel as guilty dropping a 5.7 in its place being that it's not an "as rare" car.

thanks for clarifying.

Also, your '92 has either a 3.08 or 3.42 gear and this '89 has a 2.73.

The 305 Autos with the highway gears are total dogs compared to the 5 speeds with the 3.4x rear ratios. Have two 91 GTAs, one is the 305 5-speed with N10 and 3.42 gears and the other is the 305 Auto with the single cat and 2.73s and they aren't even the same car.

Re: '89 Iroc Z

My car is an LB9 auto and I think 2.73 gears. It's a fuin car, but even with a new fuel pump and filter, exhaust, K&N drop in and full fresh tune up, my 2012 Kia Koup SX 6-speed auto will beat it hands down. So wish I had the T5 and 3.42's or evern 3.73's

Re: '89 Iroc Z

I hear ya man. I picked up a BW 9bolt w/ 2.77 gears and I'm thinking twice about keeping it. I got it thinking I'd save gas on the b4c but I don't drive it enough to justify the loss in acceleration.
I'd pull the stickers off the iroc if I ever got beat by a 4 banging soccer mom car, until I mod it of course.

Last question, did the 350 auto or 350 G92 cars come with high mph speedo or just limited to what's mentioned above?

All 350s came with the 145 mph speedo.
