What was the last year for the carbureted third gens?

I was wondering what year GM stopped offering carbureted Firebirds and Camaros? I am guessing it would be around 1987 but am not sure.

I personally like the carbureted setup best for a daily driver because the fuel pump is mounted with two bolts to the side of the engine block where its easy to get at.

The LG4 was available until 1987, but it had both a mechanical and an electric fuel pump.

Re: What was the last year for the carbureted third gens?

You mean it could have either a mechanical fuel pump or an electric pump right?
Why would someone want an electric fuel pump on a stock 4bbl carbed motor?

No, it had both.

The electric pump charges the supply line to the mechanical pump so there are no vapour lock problems.

Re: What was the last year for the carbureted third gens?

Sorry for all the questions, but why in the world would they need to do that when the 1986 and earlier ones used a mechanical fuel pump? I have had several 82's and 83's and never had vapor lock problems.

So what happens on a 1987 when the electric fuel pump goes out,can the mechanical one still run the car?

You didn't, but enough people did that there was even a dealer-installed vapour lock kit that added the electric pump and a carburetor cooling fan to earlier years.

Pictures of the installed kit have been posted before.

During the 70s cars produced less heat and had more underhood space.

The L69 engines had this problem too.

Re: What was the last year for the carbureted third gens?

i found an'84 L69 that had the carb blower-the
blower had an'85 date on it,so probably dealer
added in response to customer complaint about
vapor lock. The blower was in the RH fender
behind the battery, didn't see the hose setup as
that was missing.Only the electric fan carb
cars had the blowers or boost pumps as the
older mechanical fan cars have better underhood
ventilation and less heat buildup.
BTW,i remember watching in late '89 a news
program about the last q-jet being built-i think
a few 1990 GM cars/trucks were the last q-jet
cars made.

Yeah, IIRC, the last carbureted GM cars were the full-size 1990 Caprice/Custom Cruiser/Buick Estate wagons with the anemic Olds 307. Buick and Olds dropped their full-size RWD sedans after 1985 (and Pontiac after 1986), leaving just the Caprice as the only full-size RWD sedan in GM's lineup (other than the Cadillac Brougham, which I want to say was already TBI by 1990). The Caprice sedan went to TBI around 1987 I think.
