87 LB9 HP question

I did a search and did not find anything. I have an 87 TA LB9/A4 combo and I keep getting confused as to the HP rateing. Some stuff says it's 190 and others 210, if 190 whats the differance? Anyone know for sure?

Re: 87 LB9 HP question

IIRC, the higher horsepower rating only applied to 5 speed cars. I want to say that the 5 speed cars got the L98 camshaft, hence the power difference.

Re: 87 LB9 HP question

In '87 the LB9/5-speed cars got the L98 style camshaft. The LB9/automatic cars got the lower performance camshaft.

Re: 87 LB9 HP question

It's not all the way bad. At least your engine is stock and you can look up what all the parts for the motor are. If you buy a car thats already been modded you have to hope and pray that the owner (or previous owners) kept records of what exactly was changed. A 100% stock 1987 LB9/auto combo car may not get you a 10 sec quarter mile pass but at least you can go in a reference book (or on this website) and get all the specs for everything

That being said you can always change out the cam for something that will give you more performance.

5.0 TPI LB9 190hp with A4, 215hp with M5, & 285 lbs torque

So i'm not 30hp down I'm 35 down LOL! I do like the looks of the TPI's always have since I was a kid. I have no idea what i'm going to do with the car at this point. Part of me wants to sell it and part of me wants to keep it forever.

Re: 87 LB9 HP question

You know what I would do is sell the Mazda, & keep the t/a & if so desired In the future take the 5.0 block out and put in a used 5.7 along with the necessary upgrades, bigger injectors, mild cam, computer tuning performance chip, trans shift kit, Flowmaster 3" exhaust.

Why would I sell my truck? 1.It's kind of a project as as it's got some mods done. 2 It's my DD from say Nov-Mar. 3.I love it and have way more money in it thans my TA at this point. 4. I do use it to hual stuff all the time, to me a truck is a must.

My car is so stock so pulling the engine would just kill that fact so if I was to do an engine swap I might as well sell the car and get a car that has already been messed with and go from there.

Kia is the fun nice day summer DD and the truck is rainy day, winter, haul stuff DD-I put the Koup away in the winter. I'm single so I just switch off all the time between all the vehicles. As of late the Harley and TA have not had much use. With the truck repairs I just had to do and vacation in 3.5 weeks the TA is not going to get much love anytime soon besides a nice drive and wipe down now and then.
