History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
Hi, I am new to this forum and I am just wanting to get some educated opinions on my recent purchase. I bought a 1992 jamaica yellow firebird convertible 305tbi with 85000 miles on it. The paint is original not perfect but in pretty good shape. The interior(black) is actually in very good shape no fading, no cracks, I was very surprised how nice the interior was. The convertible top has no tears or holes but has some fraying around the trim but it does not leak at all. There is no rust and the tires are like new. Every power option works from the a\c to the cruise control. It runs really good and I got 18.87 mpg when I checked last. I paid $4500 for it. Didn't take the time to research as much as I would have liked to before I bought it and even though its too late now I am still curious if I got a good deal or not and figuring most people on this site would have some educated opinions on the matter. Thanks so much in advance for your responses.
I would feel pretty good about the deal... A rare color 'vert in good shape aren't easy to come by. Considering everything works (especially the AC) I feel you did well.
Thanks so much for the responses. I do feel better about my impulse buy. I bought a 91 red firebird coupe(v6) in 1992 a couple of years after I graduated and loved the car and I always wanted another one because I love the front ends of the 91 and 92's so I jumped without thinking a whole lot when I came across this one.
In this picture you can see the fraying on the top and this is the worst thing about the car. The back window is fogged up too but I expected that with a 24 year old car. I hope I can get the trim fixed without replacing the top but I will have to research that. This pic, to me, makes it look like the seats are faded a little but when you see it in person they are not faded, I don't think the pic does the seats justice. But I was pleased with the interior.
You were TOTALLY ripped off by those scoundrels. I feel so bad for you, that I will give you what you paid for that car. Drive it over to my house and I'll have 45 c-notes waiting for you. Then you can be rid of that headache and move on with your life!
Thats awesome!!! Too funny, the reason I was alittle concerned is that KBB says its only worth like $2100, when I seen that I was like CRAP!, I should of done some homework before I bought it.

Yeah, honestly, it sounds like you did great. And in a really rare color to boot.
If I ran across a rust free, JY convertible with a near perfect interior like that, I couldn't give them the $4500 fast enough!

I think that's an awesome find! I would have bought it.
That car is worth 6-10k depending on zipcode and time of year. For future reference on cars like this, search classifieds in some major markets (Dallas, Chicago, LA, Atlanta, New York, etc). Find some that look and are described like yours. The actual market value is often vastly different than "book" values.

Yeah, CL in Ohio is flooded with convertible cars (not necessarily roadsters like Miatas, though), especially Mustangs. People buy them, drive them for a little while, then determine our weather is too harsh to use them enough to keep them around.
Not to hijack your thread but thinking about selling mine.
Not to hijack his thread, but you did anyway.
Nice picture until I saw the tow truck cable and the flat bed. Is this going on the flatbed or coming off of it?
Just Kidding, but if you want to sell your car, start your own thread. It's the polite thing to do.

What the car means to you is important & is what in part drives the pricing of the collector car market. Why purchase a car that does nothing of you emotionally when you can get the one that buys you good memories. Absolutley a Great find!
Nice Buy! I was just in a discussion last night on the corvette forums about how worthless KBB is in determining the value of older cars.
I agree, after the cars start to age the books become a little less relevant every year. But, we are all somewhat forced to follow those price books until the cars get to an age where they are not so easy to find & slide out of the normally seen everyday driver category. Two identical cars could be purchased new on the same day & 20 years later look like they came from different planets. we have all seen both versions.
I just punched in a 1992 Z28 convertible with 25K miles for giggles.
$3500 you say? I'll take all of them you can find for me KBB

Thanks for all the info and complements! For once in my life it sure sounds like I got lucky with this car. This site is absolutely awesome. It is packed with info! I found another thread that has the color production numbers for 92 and it says they only made 54 yellow firebird convertibles. I can't believe I found one of them! Would anybody know where I could find the break down of the 54 like how many were v8's compared to v-6's?
I think you got a pretty good deal there. Congrats and enjoy your new purchase. Think about it like that...what else could you get for $4500 nowadays that would provide you with more pleasure then this car? I'd opine that there's not much that would be better than getting a cool car that you enjoy for under $5k!

I'm pretty sure that exterior color that you got on your bird is one of the least produced. Another thing is third gens are really hard to find on the streets these days. Just fifteen years ago when I was just starting out on my own in life I would see a third gen here and there every other day or so. But over the past year or so, I rarely run across even just one. Matter of fact the only time I see one now is basically on forums and for sale on ebay. Funny because I run across more 60's and 70's era Mustangs and VW bugs on the roads these days then I do third gens.
Did they even make V6 convertibles? I've never seen one, although I might not remember if I did anyway as I don't pay any attention to V6 cars in the first place.

I paid $5600 for a 1 owner with all receipts and paper work for everything done to car since new, 91 RS convertible about two years ago with 109,xxx miles that needed the hood and truck repainted. I'm happy with car but most would say I over paid.
