Which 305ci do I have, LB9 or G92
My Camaro book says the 91 Z28 came with three possible 305ci V8, the LO3 (170Hp, which is the TBI engine) the LB9 (210HP) or G92 (230HP). I know the LB9 is the TPI motor, which I have. The Chilton repair manual I bought says that the VIN code number for the engine, which is F, means it is a 5.0 TPI. But the Chilton book doesn't mention anythinga about the G92 engine. They guy I bought if from said it was a 305tpi "HO" motor but he really knew less than I do about it. What is the G92 engine?
thanks

G92 is the RPO code for the performance rear, 3.42's I believe. You have the LB9 engine (230 HP) and you should have a manual 5 speed tranny.

If you've got an automatic trans, you dont have G92, and you have the regular LB9 engine with 205 HP. If you have a manual trans, but a single catalytic converter, and drum brakes, you have the regular LB9 engine with 205 HP. If you have a manual trans, with dual catalytic converters, and disc brakes (could also be drums but more than likely discs), you have the 230 HP version of the LB9. You can also check the RPO codes in the rear locking storage compartment, and look for G92. The two engines are identical, its just the exhaust that gives it the extra horsepower.

got it (actually I dont have it)
I have the automatic so I guess its the 205 (210 according to my Camaro book)HP. I am going to get an exaust system like flowmaster or hooker so I guess that will boost me up there a little. The next one of these cars I get is going to have the 5.7L with a 5speed. Wheeeee.

Really
I did not realize that the 5.7 didnt come stock with a manual. That sucks, I remember reading in my Camaro book that the 1le comes with either a 5.0 tpi and a 5 speed, or the 5.7L tpi with the automatic. So you have to choose between the 5L with 5sp and the 5.7l with auto, geez

What I find interesting is If you bought 'maro or 'bird with TPI and got the 5 speed, you actually got the same cam as the 350. BUT if you got the automatic & a 305, you got the legendary "peanut cam" same cam that was used in a TBI engine.
This all depends on year & axel ratio of course. I have the info on my website for 87-92 if your interested.

GOOD NEWS
Well that's good news that I got the good cam and not the Peanut MFer. I looked at a lot of nice cars with TBI motors before I bought this one, I held out for the TPI because of the higher horsepower. Now Im having regrets though that I didn't get the 5.7. Its stupid I guess, I am not really into racing, I guess I just like the idea of having that extra power available if I wanted it. I love driving the car though. When I was 18 (im 51 now) I was into Volkswagon buses so I missed out on the whole muscle car deal. I wish I could go back and trade my surfer bus for a '68 SS with a 396, 375HP at 5,600rpm, 415lb-ft @3,600 screamer.

I have a Mag from 1989, it tested the 305/5-speed against the 350/Auto GTA. The 305 is just a few ticks slower in the 0-60 & 1/4mi. If anyone wants the official #'s, let me know.

actually last time i went to slp in troy, michigan; they had a 92 slp firehawk wich was a base trim model trans am with all the slp goodies.......for 17,0000.
it's a turqoise or teal blueish green color...........it's alright, but for the same price you could build yourself an outrageous thirdgen of your exact specs.

MUCHO $$
$17000 is a little more than I wanted (or am able to pay). I would consider paying up to about $9000 and I have seen low mileage Camoros (50K) in excellent condition around this range.
