Build sheet location??

I was just curious where the build sheet would be located in my 82 Z28??? I've had the rear seats out and it wasn't under there. Also, my car doesn't have the RPO sticker in the center console.....don't know what the hell happened to it. There's zero trace of it ever even being there. I looked in the little rear compartment, too, and nothing...

It May Not Even Have One ,They Weren't Required To Be Left In The Car. Most Were Thrown In The Trash On The Assembly Line.

Re: Build sheet location??

The SPID didn't start until 84. 82-83 never had them. There's a good chance there's a build sheet between the springs and the seat foam of the passenger's front seat. Usually they're more than a little shredded. Other popular places are between the carpet and floor pans, often perma-bonded to the floor. Most of the ones I've found are illegible. I've pulled entire interiors out of multiple thirdgens, most don't have one at all. I wouldn't even bother tearing a car apart to try to find a build sheet, most of the time you'll just damage the car and find nothing.

There should be a tin tag riveted to the radiator support that will have major options and colors stamped in it. 82-85ish.

My 83's build sheet, removed in 1996.

Re: Build sheet location??

C = 1982
09B = 2nd Week of September
1FP87 = Chevy, Camaro, 2DR
L = Van Nuys, CA Assembly Plant
211934 = Body Number
79B = Interior Trim - Dark Claret Standard Cloth
16L = Lower Color Silver Metallic
16U = Upper Color Silver Metallic
W = Paint Type - Water
AR9 = Relining Seats

The rest isn't on the sheet I have handy at the moment.

Here's another I found in a parts car... You can kinda see why I don't bother looking for them. LOL

2nd week of September-that is a very late build '82-I think regular '82 production started in November '81.

Yeah I guess it is! I've seen a lot of 82s with blue engines, too.....mine is black and 100% original. Do you guys know what the story is with the blue engines compared to black ones?

Re: Build sheet location??

Black engines started into production late in the 82 model year. My 82 was one of the last built Sept. 82..they ran a long model year, it was built with the black engine.

The build sheet on my '82 was in the webbing of the driver's seat lower cushion. 5/82 Van Nuys car. I've never seen an '82 with a black engine, but 09C would definitely be one of the latest ones!

Re: Build sheet location??

Mine was in the webbing under the driver seat as well for the 88.. It was missing the corners which I couldn’t find but the info is all there.. was really tight up in there and wasn’t folded or anything.. tough to get it out without ripping it.

What you show is not the master build sheet but a trim sheet. The master build sheet would have a listing of all RPO codes on the bottom along with billing/shipping dealership information.

Like Drew's example posted above:

Information wise, there's a big difference between the two.

Re: Build sheet location??

Yeah, some of the build sheets trapped in the seats contain a lot more info than others. Early cars more than later cars. The other reason I don't bother looking for them, is that there isn't much on the build sheet I don't already know. The receiving dealership, which would generally be on the invoice, the gear ratio, broadcast codes for this or that part... IDK, they're just not terribly informative.

I did a search for what the sheet I found was and saw this image for a 1989 IROC.. I assumed since the RPO codes were in the console that maybe they changed the build sheet 88-90.. my mistake..

This is what I saw in a google Image search:

Re: Build sheet location??

I’ll have to check my other seats.. if it’s anywhere I don’t have to rip the interior apart that’s as far as I’ll go looking

Re: Build sheet location??

This is a better example of a buildsheet. It's the buildsheet from Scott's 1987 IROC-Z. This is the buildsheet that most people inquire about because it contains all RPO codes as well as dealership information. That information will not be on the other trim sheets that are sometimes found within the car.

The cars have different buildsheets per car and, as many have said, they were frequently thrown out before the car was sold. I refer to the above as a "master" buildsheet because it has the amount of information that it has. The others, like your example, have sometimes been referred to as trim sheets.

Thanks for the info! It’s a bummer that early third gens didn’t have the RPOs in console.. I never knew that either.. Never owned one earlier than 85

Found mine last fall. Under a split in the carpet, under the drivers seat. Virtually perfect.

Built May 1st 1985, Norwood.

Re: Build sheet location??

I was needing some help identifying the build date on my 1985 IROC? I had some Corbeau seats installed last summer before Camaro Fest in Bowling Green, KY. The mounts were too high so I had a shop lower the seat by a good 2" about 2 weeks ago. To my surprise, this build sheet was lying in the passenger seat! I just seen it this weekend. My Dad and Mom purchased this car for me in February of 1985, so family owned since then. In my name now, and my Dad's at original purchase. I was super thrilled to see this. I think it is is pretty pristine shape for a 33 year old piece of paper.

If anyone has knowledge of the codes, or how to read this, I would appreciate!

Re: Build sheet location??

Wow, that looks great! The build date is the lower line in the upper left box, so 12/11/84 in your case. I've always wondered how accurate it is as far as when the car came off the line, but it's a awesome part of your car's history!

That is a trim sheet and not the master build sheet. The master build sheet will list all RPO codes near the bottom along with the dealership who ordered the vehicle. In addition to the top containing a lot of other codes for production.
