Emblem quality and availability

I'm in the process of freshening up my 89 IROC and it's time for me to get some new emblems and decals. I have been looking for awhile and it seems to me that the supply of NOS emblems has pretty much dried up. Anyone have a source for them?

If not, I need to take a hard look at Repro emblems. I went out on a limb and ordered a "GM Restoration" nose emblem from Hawk's and I have to say I'm extremely impressed with the quality and accuracy when compared with the OEM emblem.

Original cracked emblem
New Repro emblem
Are the rest of the Repro emblems as good? Are there certain brands to look for and ones to avoid? I need all the red emblems and decals for an L98 Iroc. I've seen the thread on the TPI emblems and it's not giving me the warm fuzzies. What's out there?

Be careful which emblems you order. There are some out there for the 88-90 IROC-Z where the font is completely incorrect, but they are marked as GM Restoration Parts. Be sure you look at the style of the Z and the R on the new emblems and get those that are the most accurate.

Incorrect: (Found on Hawk's website)

not only is the font wrong, but if you have the red emblems, the rocker emblems don’t have the correct coloration. The original has a dark red, bright red and an orange/red color fade. All the repros are only red which is fine for the bumper emblem, but the rockers were slightly different.

I did find that the nose emblem or “header emblem” I believe they call it was very accurate. I bought one but kept my original one after the paint restoration.

The decal kits from Phoenix are incredible.

The parts that are more universal for all years tend to be more correct.. The 88-90 specific parts can be a crapshoot..

Re: Emblem quality and availability

I hadn’t noticed this specifically...but always thought mine was a little off.

I bought mine at Hawks, to replace the incorrect Z/28 callout on the rear bumper.

Now I know why it seemed wrong.

Re: Emblem quality and availability

I'm glad every day there is a site like third gen.org with so much knowledge and scrutiny among its members to keep all the reproduction retailers and GM licensed guys honest. Just look at what they are producing for the general public to buy without ever questioning the exactness or quality of the reproductions.

I hadn't noticed this difference in the emblem graphics either. A thanks to you scottmoyer.

Re: Emblem quality and availability

Yep. This is great info.

So it sounds like Phoenix is my best bet to get decals and emblems together. Now if I could find a 5.7 TPI emblem that matches the original...

Re: Emblem quality and availability

the gmr nose emblem is nice looking but watch out for the center part popping out of the black plastic part. mine popped out and needed to be reglued back into the black plastic part.

how are the glasscaps compared to original emblems for anyone that has used them
