I bought an 87 Trans Am in August. It has a 305TPI with the 700R4 tranny. Now the fun stuff begins.... I got it from an auction so I have no clue on it's history or anything. No documentation was with the car other than the title. It has the digital dash and for some reason it has the 16" charcoal GTA rims.

I don't believe it is actually a GTA but how do I tell for sure if it's just a Trans Am or it really is a GTA?

BTW, it has the WS6 suspension.

Edit: It doesn't have 4 wheel disc brakes. Instead it has the disc/drum setup with 2.73s. That's just about as much as I know.

 

Not a GTA unless it has the RPO Y84, not sure though. Does the car still have the RPO's??

 

No RPO codes on the console. I haven't torn into the seats to find the other RPO list yet.

 

If its a GTA it should have GTA emblems and I think it says GTA on the steering wheel. Also there should be the top interior.

Unless someone decided to change the fenders, the most obvious way to tell is to see if there are vents on the fenders. If not, it's a GTA. If there are, it's a T/A.

All GTA's had gold wheels... thats #1 for why its not a GTA.
Like mentioned already if its a GTA there will be no air extractors in the fenders, it'll have a 3 spoke leather steering wheel with a GTA horn button (87 only), GTA badges on each fender, nose, and specific bird emblems on the sail panels.

Also already mentioned the GTA source page has a section on determining if a car is a real GTA. Check it out, it'll probably answer your questions.

The build sheet would be under the seat, but chances are it won't have much usefull info anyway... Very few of the RPO codes.. not worth messing with IMHO.

From what you're said I'd guess the car isn't a GTA. If it were then it would have been sold as one. People don't sell cars as a Trans Am if its a GTA. If anything Trans Am's get sold as GTA's.

I'd have to agree with Drew, from what you said it doesnt sound like its a GTA.

There were some GTA's made with drums rather than discs, Glenn91GTA from this board has one. GM sorta ran out of disc brakes... LOL!

 

i have a gta with drums

if the front right headlight has the word "Pontiac" in gold it may be a gta

if the bird between the tail lights is gold it might also be a gta
