Re: 1987 trans am question

According to GTASourcePage there was 9,481 - 1987 GTAs but I believe that doesn't include exports. Additionally, the T-Top was not available on the 5.7L unless the car was an export. If not an export, then it's possible it was an aftermarket conversion. Does the speedo show metric as the main measurement and do the secondary gauges show metric units?

Go ahead and post some pictures and/or mention names.

Keep in mind the car is over 30 years old so parts get changed, owners do things to their car, etc., and that doesn't necessarily make the car "rare". All GTAs has the performance suspension package.

LIke JT said, could have been an export or a custom job regarding the t-tops.

Is the name on this dashplate one that we'd recognize? Like an "A.J. Foyt" edition Trans Am (just made that up, doesn't exist)? I've seen dealers put little plaques in cars when a customer places an order rather than buying off the lot.

Re: 1987 trans am question

Looks like a 3rd party dealer-installed plaque to me. I don't believe anything like that would have come from the factory. There's a member on here who had the last Third Gen built and physically stood with the car as it was being built. He also had it signed by all kinds of the plant workers, and even he didn't get a plaque

Only thing I did not like about the last 3rd gen is all the signatures.

Re: 1987 trans am question

Is it possible that he ordered this car with t tops from the factory with 5.7 and it stayed here and not exported to Canada?

It's almost certain to be an aftermarket T-Top install

But post the SPID sticker for a final answer. It's located on the inside wall of the center console.

And that’s the thing that impresses people the most when they see my car........the signatures. A Van Nuys employee that built the car, now lives about 100 miles from me. He is going to come and visit, so he can see the signatures. I’m glad the car was signed or it would look like every other.

Really?? Considering he doesn't drive it, I think the signatures are a wicked thing to have! If it were a driver that was getting cleaned all the time then sure they'd be a bit of a pain, but I think they suit his car's story

Re: 1987 trans am question

Also peel a top off and post a pic of the roof. If they're C&C or any other aftermarket company, we'll be able to tell you pretty quick

Re: 1987 trans am question

Does it still have the RPO / service parts identification decal in the glove box like JT mentioned? If so, just look & make sure the vin on the sticker matches the cars Vin number, If your vin has an 8 in the 8th digit, you will see an L98 in the code list & the T tops would be CC1. It would be super cool if somehow, someway they were both there on an 87 GTA, but your most certainly missing one of those two options. Lots of things can happen to these cars with dealer conversions, or by past owners

Regardless how it came to be, its a cool car. Post more pics when you can.

Re: 1987 trans am question

Last time I factory-ordered a vehicle, it was a 2014 Cherokee Trailhawk. The window sticker said "Built for Ken." No interior plaque, but I have seen dealers do this.

Thats what its all about!

I am not sure what type of T-top that is, it doesn't appear to be a factory style. Also no hooks for the bag in the rear.
Most likely somebody that wanted a 5.7 GTA & had the tops added to get both options.
The dealer could have sent the car out for them as well. I wonder if the cost of those were more than the CC1 option?

Re: 1987 trans am question

Those are definitely Cars & Concepts aftermarket T-Tops. The T-Top conversion was probably done or sent out to be done by the original selling dealer. Pretty common for particular combinations (like this one) that we’re not available with T-Tops from the factory.

If I am reading you right, that's normal. The seat backs have inertial locks and do not lock under normal operation.

That black plastic **** is a cover for the **** assembly. It simply peels off of the **** assembly. Remove the black **** cover and you will see there's a screw in the center holding the **** assembly to the headrest.

That said, I would invite you to post those types of questions in other areas of the forum that are more geared for that content. This section is more about production numbers, options, nice examples for reference, what is and isn't correct for a ThirdGen, etc., while there's other forums that are geared more for trouble shooting, how to, and other questions with repairing or restoring a vehicle.

You might also stop by the Members Firebirds section to post a new thread showing your vehicle to others. It can also serve as a build thread for your car:
