Anyone ever rent a 3rd Gen Camaro or Firebird for $29.95/day?
History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!

Can't say I remember the price, but in 1985 I flew to Florida for a weekend, rented a 1985 Firebird and put about 1000 miles on it in those two days; unlimited mileage rental. Orlando, Daytona Beach(ON the beach, of course; how can you not?), the coast highway to Ft. Lauderdale, Miami to Key West and back, then across and up the west coast, Naples, Fort. Myers, Sarasota, St. Pete beaches, Clearwater, Tarpon Springs, Tampa then back to Orlando. Florida, Firebird, Tears For Fears and me. "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" was playing on every radio station in every town I passed through, and it's been my song ever since. "I RULE!" It was a blast!

Rented a Firebird convertible in San Diego in February of 1992. It was unseasonably warm when I was there for a work trip, temps in the low '90s. Upgraded my company-provided rental car, at my own expense of course, to that Firebird. Only a V-6, but a really nice, fun car.

My uncle rented me a 92 camaro RS in December 1991 when I graduated from UT Austin. My girlfriend (now wife) worked at airport rent a car place here in Austin and rented it for me for the weekend.
3 months later I brought my first 3rd gen. 91RS 305 tbi 5 speed.
I need to dig up pics from 30 years ago.

$77 was pricey for a rental car last year. Now it's a bargain, if you can find one. The rental companies dumped much of their fleets during the pandemic because their revenue was collapsing. In 2019, I rented a Chevy Impala for a week. It cost me < $300 with unlimited mileage.
I'm heading on a vacation next week. The rental car - a minivan for our group - is $1,000 for the week.

Would have been great to rent one, was too poor. First car I ever rented was in 1993 (paid by prospective employer), they gave me a huge 4 door boat of a luxury car cause they were out of others. still remember driving down the road on my way to job interview and Frankenstein came on the radio.

First time I ever got a rental car was with my job and the rental fleet didn't have the right car for me. A Hummer H2 rolls up and they give me the keys.
At first I thought it was my lucky day! Only took me a couple hours to hate that thing. Couldn't wait to give it back and never see one again. Anybody that has one of those things is touched in the head.

So late 1989, me and my friend/classmate/workmate had to go to Palm Beach for a couple of days on business. We figured, since we're down there anyway, we'd take a few vacation days and chill out. We decided to rent a convertible while we were down there. They only had base 4 cylinder Mustang convertibles. I reserved one. When we landed at the airport, we split up and I said I'd go pick up the rental. As the girl was finishing the paperwork I asked if they had any V8 Mustang convertibles? She said no, but they just got in a brand new 1990 Mustang GT. I asked if it was an auto or 5 speed, feeling sure there was no way they'd have a stick. She said it was a 5 speed. WHAT!!?!?
I asked how much to rent the GT. She said same as the 4 cylinder 'vert. I said I'll take it!!!! White with a red interior. It smelled brand new - because it was. I don't think it even had 100 miles on it.
When I pulled around to pick up my friend he says, "hey, this isn't a convertible". I said, yes I know, but I couldn't resist. For the next 4 or 5 days, the abuse I heaped on that poor car was unbelievable! 5,000 RPM launches were common. Smokey burnouts at every opportunity. Those poor Gatorbacks!
It didn't seem as stable at high speed as my new IROC did though and the brakes weren't as good, but man could it burn rubber.
When I turned it in at the airport on our way home, the exhaust was still crackling and popping and it smelled of burned rubber and clutch. I always wondered what became of that car after the way we broke it in.
I think it cost $25-$30 per day. Well worth it, it was the highlight of my trip.

Wow. That's crazy pricing. I worked at Hertz car rentals in 2005-2006. We used to rent out sedans for $150 a week unlimited mileage.

Yeah it is nuts.
It's a family vacation with two of my sisters and their husbands. I'm a bit younger than the rest of them, And I'm definitely more of an outdoors person. We're heading to Sedona, and I thought maybe I'd get an additional car for myself, do some exploring that would probably be beyond what they'd want to do physically. We're all going on a couple of tours, including a day trip to the Grand Canyon. Figured I'd explore some other stuff on my own while they're out shopping and doing typical touristy stuff.
I still may try that, but my sister, who planned the trip, said "Good luck" on the car. Expensive and not plentiful. I'll see when I get there. Maybe some little econobox won't be too bad.
*** Just checked Hertz today. Prices not so bad, could get a midsize for around $350. Maybe when my sister reserved this van a few months ago prices were much higher. I didn't see any bigger vehicles listed at the Phoenix airport, except for a pickup (about $850). So maybe regular-sized cars are reasonable.

Renting from the car rental places at the airports are always much much more expensive. One trick is to see if they have a lot off site and check the prices there. For example if a rental from the airport is $400 a week, the lot a mile away might be $250 a week. That is the way it used to be when I worked there. You pay a premium for having the rental right at the airport. You reserve the car at the location near the airport, then take a cab from the airport to the rental lot and save hundreds.

I just turned in a GMC Terrain that I rented for 8 days. $1200 with all the insurance I could stack on it from Enterprise Rental. I put 5845 miles on it…unlimited mileage of course. Family road trip/vacation. Saw 17 states and had a blast. They could have charged me triple…couldn’t care less. Same trip 2 years ago, same class SUV, cost me like $980.
Re: Anyone ever rent a 3rd Gen Camaro or Firebird for $29.95/day?
Rented Camaros Trans Am’s and Mustangs back in the day. My GMC dealer would give me a Trans Am for a loaner. I had a crew cab with a 454 and the engine dropped a valve. They had the truck for two months. I got a new rental every week. I think I drove all of GMs line up in 1991
the camaros were weak sauce. The Mustangs and TAs came with V8s. Automatics but t was expected.
I never paid fir the rentals but the dealer got even lower pricing
