History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
Oddly enough, I've seen a BUNCH of rear wiper 82-84s pop up lately. My 82 has one. I wouldn't call them "rare" but definitely they made more without than with.
I *almost* bought that car out of NY, but my wife would have killed me if I bought another TA. I hope you are planning to restore it to factory appearance (obviously, with a different drivetrain!)
Just picked up a solid roller 1984 Trans AM L69 and found it has a rear wiper I have never seen one before are they rare?
The following is from the Camaro White Book, but the info should provide a general idea about rarity.
RPO C25 (Rear Window Wiper with Washer)
1982: 14,031
1983: 10,900
1984: 12,268
1985: 7,367
1986: 1,566
The wiper and the louvers were 2 options that weren't real popular. Besides being ugly, the wiper didn't actually work worth a crap (like minivans, the motor was too weenie), and the louvers were not only ugly but also noisy. The whole trend of louvers had pretty much run its course during the 70s though, and had mostly petered out by the 80s. The wiper could possibly have been A Good Idea though if they had just given it some testicular fortitude.
I knew more than one person back in the day that deleted the wiper system entirely and glassed in the hole.

In this neck of the woods, from ‘85 to ‘89, if you didn’t put a set of louvers on your camaro or T/A, you were shunned on cruise night. They were the shiznit…
My mom put a set on her new ‘89 RS she bought. I’m glad the fad faded by the time she got the ‘92 I now own. I can’t say I’ve ever seen more than a dozen rear wiper cars ever in person.
I remember seeing a Ton of louvered Rear-Glass Third-Gens in the 80s and early-90s!
They were very popular (at least where I lived back then)!
At that point in time, I actually thought that the Hood-Louvers and the Rear-Glass Louvers looked great!
But I am a sucker for Third-Gens, so maybe it had nothing to do with Louvers at all... who knows!
To this very day, I cream in my pants for Third-Gens.
...suspension lowered a little, some kind of Corvette 5-Spoke Mag-Wheels, shaved Emblems and Trim, smoothed Body-Panels (and Fire-Wall too)...
all Amber-Lights changed to clear (side markers) and read (Tail Lights), HIDs, and some nice Paint.
It always amused me how they just moved the nozzle over to clear the third brake light.
Gotta love goofy GM. Though I've seen a number of cars with the wiper/washer feature, I've never seen the off-set washer nozzle. Somehow amusing. Sweet yellow, BTW.
