Sometimes before you post a question that you think might have been asked before, use the Search feature. There is so much information on these boards, and alot of the time you can answer your question without even having to ask it. N/p if u don't though, we are here to help out, just as long as it doesn't get ridiculous. J/k.

Back in the early 60's Chev in all their great wisdom, gave them their F-body name, what I read in an old Hot Rod mag, was the F was given, cause the bigger cars ie: Chevelle was given the letter A was bigger that the Camaro.
If I'm wrong it wouldn't be the first time.

makes sense because B body are larger than F body, but then B b body are larger than A body so hm.. X body in the 68-79 years were smaller than B body, too, and H body in 71-80 or so were smaller thna all of them, so , hmmmm.. GM reinvents the body designation letters every decade or two or three as a whole new type of car, are reassigned..

Its just a way for GM to designate cars that are built on the same platform. There's no reason why one car or another is a different letter.

its like the old "k" cars from Chrysler, the F indicates a line of cars that are similar. 1g2fs the 4th didget is an F on all third gen camaros and Firebirds...
