Hey all ,
I have a 1985 iroc z with the l69, just wondering if anybody can tell me how to check to see if my engine is matching numbers. Any info will be much appreciated. Thanks

I believe the number above the left port (if your looking at the car from the front) of the water pump mounting point should match your vin. Not 100% on that, though.

Re: how to check for match numbers
I'm really not sure there is a real "numbers matching" identification on these cars. Different body parts, yes, mine has stickers with the Vin on the inside of most of the panels; but as for the motors, I've never seen anything that identifies it for a specific car/Vin.
Re: how to check for match numbers
The flat machined on the top of the block for the passengers side head extends forward past the head about a 1/2". Look behind the alternator on early cars, or the A/C pump on later cars. On that pad there will be a couple codes stamped. One of these codes is the last part of the VIN number. The partial VIN should match the last 6 digits of the VIN on the car. If the block has been decked, the stamp will be gone. It usually takes at least a couple squirts of carb cleaner and some scrubbing with a brush to see the stamp. In extreme circumstances it can take some serious degreasing.
Re: how to check for match numbers
Actually, there is. Part of the last digits of the vehicle's VIN will be stamped on the engine block. This does apply to these cars. The last few digits of my GTA's VIN is stamped on the block of the engine and they match. There was some crud to remove, as the numbers aren't stamped heavily, and on my 1988, it's behind the A/C compressor for even harder viewing.
Ummm.... that doesn't sound right at all....

Just for the sake of argument, the stamp on the 267cu V8 in my 1980 Malibu matched the VIN number, as does the 5.7L in my 87 Iroc, and the 5.7L in my 91 Formula. For pretty much any "modern" gen I small block the rule applies.

Re: how to check for match numbers
To go one step further (just for fun), the stamp pad should also show the final assembly date of the engine (month and day).
Example: 0807 = August 7th
This can be cross-referenced with the build date of the car on the driver's door, not that I think anyone has started restamping third gen engines yet as we all know they're not yet particularly valuable cars.

Do you have a pic of the partial vin stamp on the engine block?
Thanks

Re: how to check for match numbers
Is there a way to verify if the trans is "numbers matching" to the rest of car?
Re: how to check for match numbers

No offense or anything, but it's frustrating when people won't even TRY to help themselves...
