Crazy looking door panel?
Ok so I decide to take apart my door panel and redo the interior with vinyl instead of the custom burlap that was put on by the previous owner in Florida. As I start to take it off I hear cracks all over the place. I notice that they used a piece of paneling wood as a template or door panel backing, then covered it in foam to give it shape, then placed burlap over it.
Do all of our cars have a wood door panel backing like that or did I just get unlucky? I expected it to be plastic so I could just strip off the material and then lay down the vinyl.
I am also thinking of making a door panel out of fiberglass, any ideas on what I should do? And lastly, there are alot of junkyards around here and pretty much only have IROC's. I have an RS and am wondering if an IROC door panel would fit on my RS?

Stock, the doorpanels have a stiff cardboard-like backing structure. Not the best choice since it can be bent fairly easily upon removal, and if moisture gets to it it's toast.

All 82-92 Camaro door panels are interchangeable, the only difference is some have the holes for manual window cranks. There are several styles, colors, etc but all will snap right in.
Of course, I don't know the whole story and I can't see the panel all that great in the picture. However, from what I can see in the picture, IMO, the custom burlap panel looks GREAT! I understand that you said you wanted it vinyl. Is that the ONLY reason? It looks like you may have destroyed a ton of hard work and an awesome looking custom door panel.

I know that from a distance the door panel looks great, but that is a picture of the one on the passenger side which is the only part left in what you could say "good" consition. The interior was done over about 8 years ago I think and the driver side door was a MESS!. It was fading and was worn out and there were strands all over the place. I gotta tell ya, it looked awesome when I got the car but its made of burlap and it doesnt hold up to time really well. I hated to do it but the interior had seen enough and its time for something new. Even the dash pad they did a good job on but the sun has taken a besting on it. The colors they used on the interior in general were grey and baby blue, but now they look like a sort of black and darkish blue.
Check this place out! They should have whatever you want to replace them with. Plus, the guy is a member of this board.

The stock door panels are cardboard. But I think the panels vary from year to year. The holes for the armrest may be different, so double check them before you buy.
