Front Seat Belts for 1982 Firebird

Hi all,
I need to replace my driver side seat-belt. It is worn and could proberly be consider unsafe. I know that 1983 up Firebirds has dual retractors on the front seatbelts. My 82 has retractors only at the top. I would rather get the same type of seatbelts. I would also like to get new belts.

I have gone to GMParts Direct and they are calling out the same part numbers for all years. Does anyone know of the part numbers that I need to get the correct belt/retractors assemblys?

Thanks for your help!

you're very lucky because of the fact that 4th gen front seatbelts would be a direct bolt-in replacement for you. They went back to the retractor on top and solid mount on bottom design. I got ahold of a set of 82 door sill trim pieces myself to match the 4th gen seatbelts I got.

I'm also using a set of 4th gen belts in my 82. Couldn't be happier, they work and look like they are only a few years old rather than 24 years old.

interesting...didn't know that the 4th gen seatbelts would be a direct bolt in for the '82's....I've been trying to get a set of tan seatbelts for my '82 TA and have not had much luck and when I do find some, the plastic is all worn or cracked. Would this be for all 4th gens, or just certain years. Also, what about the rear seatbelts? Would they be a direct bolt in as well?

just wondering about the rear seats...did the 4th gens have the rear lap belts or did they switch them to the shoulder belt style like the fronts? I need some rear seatbelts and I want just lap belts for my '82, since the shoulder style most likely wont fit.

all year 4th gen front belts will be a direct bolt-in. they will bolt into later 3rd gens too, but there will be a large gap in the plastic door sill trim. As for rear belts, i converted my 84 TA to rear 4th gen shoulder belts, but it was a PITA. They are far from a bolt-in. You'll want to get rear lap belts from a 3rd gen between 82 and 88, they went to rear shoulder belts in 89.

great...people want too much money for seatbelts, weather tan or black. I can get a set of 4th gen tan for $20 front and back...much cheaper than a set from a 3rd gen but I wont have any use for the rears, and the colors from 3rd to 4th gen probably wont match either. I was thinking about black also, I know someone who can get me a black set too from a 4th gen, but finding third gen, and just the rear is a different story.

i think i still have a black set of rear lap belts that i had in before converting to rear shoulder belts. I think they were in pretty good condition, but I don't remember exactly how good. I can try to hunt them down and send you some pics if you're interested. I think I also have the original tan belts from the car, the fronts are in rough shape but there rears might be good

Buying use seat belts are not a good ideal. Most cars you find in salvage yards has been involved in accidents. Used seat belts, retractors that have been involved in accidents have undergone a strain which could reduce there effectiveness in the next accident. I guess its your life.

i have to disagree with all of your points. the majority of cars I have seen in junkyards aren't there because they were wrecked in an accident. Also, I don't believe that seatbelts are a one-time-use item where they are automatically damaged if they were in a car that was hit. I don't think you are any less safe with seatbelts that appear undamaged from a junkyard car than you would be with the original seatbelts from a car made in 1982.

I did not say my originals were still safe. I have been trying to replace them for years.

But like I said, its your life. As for me, I would not purchase any use safety belts.
