90-92 Speedo Calibration

Alright story begins with getting pulled over twice within 1/4 mile. First violation was 62 in a 45 and the second one was 10 (yes ten) in a 35. My speedometer has aftermarket 145 mph glow gauge faces that were in the car whn I bought it, but the speedo is notoriously wrong. When I told the first officer my speedometer was inaccurate he told me regardlessly drive by what the needle says is the speed... less than 1/4 mile later another township officer pulls me over for going ten. I think they were giving me a hard time b/c I spit rocks all over the first officers car... but... is there any way I can recalibrate the all electronic speedo to accurately read?

I wanted just to buy a new 145 mph speedo but those cost too much... cheapest one I've seen yet was for $250 starting bid on ebay several months ago

Any tips or advice regarding the speedo or fighting my ticket is appreciated.

"all over MI" if your anywhere near ypsi, i think that there is a shop on michigan that can recalibrate speedometers, but ive never been there myself. id try looking in the phonebook, or talking to a local mechanic.

as far as the ticket goes, if you do get it recalibrated bring the recipt so that you have proof that it was wrong. Equipment Malfunction is $120, and no points... trust me i know

I'm up in the Flinttown... yeah, I hope I can get out of it... officer was a **** so I spit rocks all over his car. I am guessing by his "I've been seeing you drive too fast all over this town" he's the officer i successfully evaded the week prior.

you can recalibrate the speedo with a custom chip, I've done it for guys who swapped out rears, but you''ll have to figure out how far its off

Take off the overlays. The 145mph glow gauges, the plain glow ones and the reverse glows, don't match up with the numbers on the speedometer. I bought some of the reverse glow ones to go with the 145mph cluster I bought and I checked before I stuck the cluster back in the car and the numbers on the overlay have more spacing inbetween them than the gauge does.

Yeah, I figured as much becasue the speedo inaccuracy is exponential... but anyhow, if I go get my speedo verified it's wrong, then take the overlay out, should they let it slide?

Just take the overlay off and then get a friend to drive in front of you and talk to you on a cell phone and tell you how fast he is going.

If you drive down I 475, and time yourself between mile markers while your driving 60 Mph it should take you exactly 1 min. I usually do 5 miles stretches to make sure.

On the Firebirds there is actually a little line on the original speedomoter background that tells you where the needle should point while at rest.

If your speedometer is binding on the overlay then that too will throw the whole thing off...

First thing I would do is get a friend to drive in front of you and then pace yourself to get yourself close, If its 20mph too high then lower it by 20 mph etc... it only takes a few hours of screwing around to get it reasonably close.

I too am from Flint... technically Clio.

chip??

89vert, you metioned recalibrating the speedo with a custom chip? What do you have to edit? My speedometer is off as well, went from 2.73 to 3.42. It reads 125% of how fast im actually going.

With a rear end gear change, you can just buy new speedometer gears that go in the tail of the transmission. This page will tell you what you need and they also sell everything you need. There is also a tech article here about how to change the gears, it doesn't seem too hard. I have to change mine soon. http://www.transmissioncenter.net/sp...n_______va.htm

Regarding the rock spitting... this time it was a somewhat legitament thing, this officer was a ****weed from **** and it was half a mechanical issue. As for hard times i can't seem to zstop having them.

You still have gears, the sensor still reliess on 2 small gears to generate current to run the speedometer. This is still the case on newer cars I believe.

The reprogram method I am doubtful of for 3rd gens thru 1989 on firebirds, it MIGHT be possible in 1990 thru 1992 Camaros & Firebirds however but I have never looked at reprogramming one of those.

Keep in mind that Camaros thru 1989 still used a Cable, and Firebirds used a cable thru 1985. (NOTE: The non-gage package still used a cable on Firebirds...)

SLP used to sell trans gears for the 700R4/4L60 for 3.73 & 3.70 axels, they might still have them, they also had them for the Manual Transmissions.

For the 90-92s that have the electronically operated speedos the "chip" I believe he's talking about is a box that costs $150 or so that modifies the signal to the speedometer for the changes you've made for you car.
