does antone know if it is possible to put a second gen dash and console into one of our cars because i like the second gen stuff even tho it is kind of like taking a step back. I think it would be different because ive seen 4th gens dashes all the time.just think it would be unique.

 

i think i posted this question awhile back and what i was told is that it isnt large enough to fit or maybe the other way around...something along those lines.

Well, that doesnt mean you can mod it to fit, make it longer or shorter. To be unique, you have to do unique things.

 

very true i was also thinking about the corvette dashes because i dont like the big overhang on the passenger side of th thirdgens i'll prob end up puttin in a fourth gen interior i was just weighing my options

 

i like the stock dash and gauges.....

 

i'm a stock **** myself, but its always interesting to see what ppl do with their time and resources.

of course on their car, not mine.

 

so do I except for the passenger side hang over it wobbles too much or is that just my car?

 

Check the screws on the underside of the part that hangs over. There are supposed to be a handful of screws down there holding the dash pad on.

you may have loose screws or broken mounts that connect your plastic dash shell to the top of the firewall. Remove your dashpad and take a look at the 6 or so screws that hold the top of the dash assembly into the car. My firebird had some broken plastic mounts that made the dash move around quite a bit. I believe the camaro ones are metal reinforced though, so it's less likely to be the case.

 

It's the dash pad itself on the 2nd gen dashes that are inferior. One of the worst engineered dashes Chevrolet ever made. They consistantly warp. It is rare to see a second gen Camaro with one that isn't warped.

 

you could customize/build one to look like a 2ndgen dash, start with a stripped dash shell/frame & go from there

And as for the dash. Awesome. All you would have to do (I say it like its easy) is fiberglass each piece of the second gen (if its shorter than the 3rd gen dash) a little longer....and vice cersa if its too long. Im an engraver for an awards company so everything always has to be proportionally correct, and measured to the thousandth. Its harsh but everything looks so good. Remember measure TWICE cut ONCE.

I've got a 2nd gen (81 camaro), and a third gen (90 formula), both
in various stages of extensive restoration. (I have 2 many sons, with
to-short attention spans. Long boring story...) While everything is
possible, be aware that what you're considering is not for the faint
of heart. Getting the secondary things like heater/ac ducting to match
will be truly daunting. What about something like putting aftermarket
gauges into a custom panel to replace the instrument cluster?

And on the case of the dash....I am just getting my STOCK 3rd gen dash ALL FIBERGLASSED to look stock appearing....then maybe mold in my Laptop and radio and maybe a new guage cluster....nothing to drastic....I like the stock 3rd GEN dash....except the big rectangle on the pass side.....but thats where my laptop will be...on a holder and slider so I can move it towards me closer. HELLZ YEAH

 

I was just telling one of my car buddies over coffee the other night how much I don't miss the old 77 Camaro I had years ago, since everything in it was so cheap and cheesy, especially the dash! The only thing I wish Chevrolet would've carried over to the thirdgen models was the 8.5" ten bolt rear, they're fairly indestructible! I remember the doors sagged so bad on that car due to crappy, worn out hinges, that I used to jack the whole car up every few months using a 2x4 and a floor jack under the ends of the doors just to get them to shut again. And don't even get me started on how many times the outer door handles broke. Lol.

 

wow, shouldn't you have replaced the hinges or bushings rather than bending the body to compensate for it? I can't imagine doing that to a car that I gave a damn about

 

Lol, yeah if it was a car I actually cared about, sure I would've rebuilt the door hinges. I only paid $350 for the whole car, and it was a total rust bucket. I remembered to not leave any sockets on the back floorboards after one of them rolled out of a big hole in the floorboard. Not only were the door hinges shot, the driver's side striker post was all messed up and whoever owned it before me tried to weld it in place, which made it even worse. That car was so rusty I could reach down through the door jamb vent, which was missing, and stick my hand through the hole at the bottom of the quarter panel in front of the rear tire. The original 305 in it used about 2 quarts of oil a week, and I finally ran it out of oil, causing a spun rod bearing. I considered it a mercy killing for that tired old 305. The body was totally trashed on that car, but I dropped a small block 400 in it and had a lot of fun with it until a bad wrist pin caused the 400 to grenade. After that I kept the TH350, the gauges, spoilers, etc., and sent the rest of it to the boneyard. Ahh, what memories!

Not necessarily. Ask someone who's restored a 2nd gen camaro how hard it is to find decent parts for it and how hard it is to keep one up. I've already been down that road along with several friends of mine. My thirdgen is a lot easier to keep up. Even though thirdgens have a lot of stuff that universally go bad on almost all of them, it still pales in comparison to the 2nd gens. Between the 69 RS/SS and the 89 RS, I'm more than happy with the f-bodies I have now.

 

if you wanna put a lap top in your car go to the police junk yard where they scrap there cars and you can buy the mount andthe equipment to hook it up just get the one for the lt1 camaros the troopers have and not for the crown vics.

Everything gets hard to find as the years pass because there are fewer to be had. You can however get many reproduction parts from many different manufacturers. Also you could see if like this forum someone has set up an "online junk yard" and maybe you can get what you need there. As for the up keep if you tint your windshield and windows you'll stop a large portion of the problem. the older parts are very suseptable to warping in the sun. A tint will stopp some heat and can stop a good amount of uv rays if you choose the right tint.

 

Amen brother. I can sum up the reason my thirdgen dash doesn't have any cracks in it with one word. SUNSHADE. Same thing goes for the tops of the rear seats. LOUVERS.
