i recently had my 92 broken into and i need a new steering column with the vats. anyone know where i can get one new if possible and how much i'm looking at. i've had keys made before and know that doing such alone was around $125. curious what the whole thing is.
thanks.

Like those? I don't know if they come with the VATs system but it should for that price. BTW, use the drop boxes to select year camaro and model.
This site is like gmpartsdirect. I use it to get part numbers all the time. Never actually ordered from them.

wow that's an interesting site. thank you! had no idea how expensive they are. someone breaks your column and that alone could quite possibly total a car out.
hmm... crazy.

Yea mine was busted into a while back and they punched the column. I am fortunate to have a non vats version, so I am sure I can find one at the junk yard for little to no money. You could also see if someone here on the forums has a vats column lying around too.

Is there a way to rip the VATS wiring from the column and just hardwire the resistor in series somewhere else? If you can separate the circuit from the column you could grab one from the junkyard. But I dont know how feasible that is.
In my opinion the best bet is to find someone parting out a 90-92 Camaro and buy the entire used column from the steering wheel to the steering box connector and most importantly, get the matching key. If VATS becomes a problem just burn a new PROM with VATS turned off, no wiring needs to be changed. If you don't have PROM burning equipment sitting around someone is doing it on Ebay right now for $60 (they will burn new PROMS with stuff like VATS/EGR turned off, no timing/spark changes). A while back one of my friends parted out his 91 Z28 so I took the entire column just in case something like this happens. Only thing is, forgot to keep the matching key.

I don't think you need the whole steering column. If I remember correctly from last time I had my GTA column open, the VATS wire runs right from the ignition module down through the colunm and out the bottom. I think you can add a VATS ignition module to any column as long as you're up to the task of running the wiring through it. Just the ignition switch shouldn't cost that much. I don't know where you were paying $125 for keys, but every time I get a VATS key made it's $20.

When mine was broken up by a would be thief, i bought a column on ebay. At first i was going to use it for parts but it got pretty tricky in the column. So what i did was take out my lock cylinder and put it in the new column. There is a wire attached to it for the vats system that you have to feed it down the middle of the column. And i just swapped out the columns. the one that was broken was all broke appart by the turn signal lever and the tilt lever.
