Cupholder

Well theres one major thing that my interior is lacking in, you guessed it, a cup holder. Has anyone ever made a custom one, is there a kit I can buy, any advice on how to make a custom one?

Theres a tech article on turning your ash tray in the cneter console into a cup holder. Ive has also seen kick panels made into cupholders, kinda dumb though cause you got to lean forward and lose sight of the road to grab the drink (if you can reach that far).

Later firebirds came with cup holders in the door, or you can do a 4th gen console swap, some of those came with 4 cupholders like the '97 I used to have. The cars really aren't set up for cupholders anywhere else though.

I did have a crazy idea to use a cupholder out of a Ford Taurus once though, they're about the size of an aftermarket radio and have two pop out cupholders.

I think Im gonna use the tech article and change my ash tray into cupholders. It seems like it should be an interesting project.

you could prolly make a cupholder outta the area where the console clock goes. I have a clock and the outline underneath seems like it could fit a decent sized cup. Just putting my .02

I bought a couple of cheap cup holders at Pep Boys (the kind that were meant to hang from the window).
Cut them down and modified them with some Velcro and then pop riveted them on the sides of the center console.

Not a good picture but you'll get the idea, hopefully.

ahhhh, I wish I could find the thread for you but I'm sure someone knows what I am talking about. Someone here made took a cup holder out of a nissan truck (I think), the one that you push in and it pops out and then you push it back in to secure it when it isn't used. Anyway he modified it to go right underneath the vents under the center of the dash, and it came out looking clean as hell and nice. Anyway like I said I'm sure someone remebers who that was, but that is what I plan on doing when I get around to it.

I just pulled this pic off ebay, it was from a 93-97 altima, but it has the idea that I was talking about to help you understand alittle clearer, and he just mounted it right under the center vents.

I'm planning the center console area, where the clock was in the 83/84 cars. However, before you go drilling and popping any old round cylinder shape in there - check under - the 1990 & up cars have an air bag sensor in the way of any cupholder deeper than 2 inches.

There's a reason that most thirdgen's didn't come with cup holders.... because you shouldn't be drinking in them.

One time I gave in and let a co-worker bring a soda into my car... yeah... needless to say, that won't be happening again.
