AUTOMATIC 4th Gen center console

I finally got my 4th Gen center console that came off a 2002 Firebird. Yes, I decided to go the hard way and install a functioning automatic center console... And yes, I'm getting rid of the shiftknob (it looked better with the old console). I had remove the stereo/ac "box" and stack them on top of each other. They barely fit but they work. Thats my next task, building an actual housing unit for the stereo/ac since what it has now is just a "courtesy box" (made out of a black trashcan I bought at walmart) so you won't see the exposed wires...Any comment, opinions, tips?

It looks good, but for me, just looking at those pics it feels like a fourth gen console might not be the way to go!

I hope this is the case with the newer console, and the fact that its an automatic. But, getting everything cramed like that really does not look to great.

Yea, fab something up. Maybe it will make me think differently.

Good job on the install. I think the 4thgen console matches your bird seats better than my zseats. But I was wondering why don't you just swap the whole thing, dash and console? That is what I am finishing up now and the end product is looking good. One question, you did have to use a 4thgen shifter correct?

I think if you use a 4th gen shifter and 4th gen shift cable, you won't have to move the console so far foward and it should fit better.

I just bought the center console by itself, so I didn't have a 4th Gen shifter. I had to modify the base so the whole center console sits a bit higher, I didn't want to cut out the whole section where the shifter goes. The main reason I liked the automatic console is because there is an actual needle that indicates what gear is selected (since my previous console only lit up)... My car is a daily driver, so I can't do anything major that requires more work than a weekend can deliver. I definitely plan on making a new stereo box, I'm going to have to hit the boneyards for another 3rd Gen box that I can trim down....

Re: AUTOMATIC 4th Gen center console

Did you have electric windows and mirror switches in the old console? If so what did you do with them in the new one?

You can mount a 4th gen mirror switch in the storage pocket up next to the cig lighter. And, you can make a custom mounting plate to mount under the ashtray lid, in which to mount your window switches. If you want pics, let me know.

HCR13, it looks very good. Too bad you couldn't do it while keeping the original radio/heater control pod, though.

I have power windows, but not mirrors. At the time the picture was taken, the switches were just in the glove box () but now I actually have them in the "3rd Gen location". I also installed another switch for neon lights under the wheel wells. I'll take a picture of this tomorrow morning. I was a little hesitant to cut holes in my console, but now I'm glad I did. I think it looks much better now with different switches and such. Its not as plain.
I'm still going to get 4th Gen door panels and install those.
I don't plan on doing a whole 4th Gen Dash. I actually like my 4 circles. It makes me think of a fighter jet. Also, half a block of a 350

Re: AUTOMATIC 4th Gen center console

Well, here is the pic of the center console up to date. The two window switches are right behind the central cup holder, and I have a rocker panel switch under the primary cigarette lighter...
ps. sorry my car is dirty. I just installed my temporary black door panels today and the doors were open all day. Its pollen hell where I live...

Re: AUTOMATIC 4th Gen center console

How did you get the shifter to fit up through the console? Did you just move the console forward and make new holes to bolt it in, or...?

Re: AUTOMATIC 4th Gen center console

Yeah, pretty much. I had to sacrifice my radio pod, but I aligned the console to the shifter, not the shifter to the console. You have to make new bolt holes since its not a direct fit. It is also raised about 1 1/2in since the shifter is too tall for the 4th Gen console...

Re: AUTOMATIC 4th Gen center console

What parts did you used to modify the radio and AC housing?
