Car interior paint?!

My interior is in great condition along with the carpet, but i dont particularly like the grey color anymore.I have next to no money to spend on my car right now so i cannot to afford to replace the plastic trim, seats, and carpet. I heard you can use special upholstery spray paint, but i cant find any or even what its exactly called. Also can this paint be used to paint the carpet? And what should i do about the gray plastic trim? Help would be very much appreciated.

Re: Car interior paint?!

the plastic trim can be painted with spray paint or if u want to do it right u can get interior paint, i think its sold at autozone, not sure, they do have it in yearone as for the carpet, i dont think u can paint it, and i wouldnt try, they do have paint to paint the seats but after about a month or two it looks like crap ur best bet is to buy a new carpet and seats or keep it the way it is, paint the plastic trim with interior paint

Re: Car interior paint?!

There is a special interior plastic trim paint from DuPont out that is painted on like you would paint the outside of the car through a paint gun. It is really expensive and is still prone to chip if it is abused or wacked with shoes or misc. things associated with using a vehicle. There is some stuff for carpets and seats that I hear works alright, but it tends to fade as well...the paint for the plastic trim is the only one I'd use and you still have to be very careful with it. As far as carpet goes, you can get brand new carpet for the entire car for like $350, so it is worth it to just save up and buy new...the seats are pricey no matter how you look at it...buying new, good used, or re-upholstering are all expensive. I'd just keep an eye out for a good deal in the classifieds or maybe hit up your junk yard every once in a while and see if they have any new arrivals in decent condition. Good luck...the interior is what I've been on for a bit now...it just takes patience and saved up money unfortunately.

Re: Car interior paint?!

You could try what I did, I painted my plastic trim black from gray with Krylon Fusion rattle can paint. The plastic looks like it's supposed to be black, it really does look very good. I cannot say how it wears yet though because I haven't taken the car out of storage yet; there is still 6" of snow and it can't seem to get above 30* outside.

I used Dupli color on the plastic trim. Looks good. Also painted back seat, but noone is ever back there. Heard it flakes on carpet and seats, dont know if that is true.

Re: Car interior paint?!

For the carpet and seats, get Duplicolor Vinyl and Carpet paint... works amazing.. I did my cargo carpet with and it looks like new... I also painted the back of the rear seats

Before

After

For the plastic parts, just use spray paint for plastic, thats what i did and everything came out good

Re: Car interior paint?!

I have used Duplicolor Vinyl and Upolstery dye with great results. One thing before you spray your plastic pieces get some acetone and wipe them down throughly this will remove all the cleaners ( armor all, meguiars and so on) and the dye job will last alot longer. I did mine about 3 years ago and it still looks great!

if your looking for a factory look the rattel can suff will work and come out nice. if your looking for a smooth glass finish then a lot of sanding goes in to it along with paint from a gun. this is offtopic here is a truck im doing for sema 08 and i have been working out of my garage.

its not cheep to do unless you do it your self im thinking about doing the same to my 91 camaro

Re: Car interior paint?!

well i just bought the dupli-color vinyl and upholstery paint from pep-boys...im doing a few practice sprays on some stuff i own.

so far it holds up really well...i sprayed my old floor mat from my car ( ya i dunno y i still have them either) and i let it dry for about 4 hours...and even with just one coat it holds up really really strong...i had to scrathc the s*** out of it to even get a flake of black paint..

and then it just down poured rain last night and i had it in my back yard...even it being soaking wet, it was still as strong as dry

this is some good ish

Re: Car interior paint?!

Krylon Fusion paint works awesome on the plastic parts of the interior and will not come off very easy. I didn't use any chemical cleaners, I just shoved what I could into the dishwasher and ran it through a cycle then scrubbed the parts that wouldn't fit in there with dish soap and warm water. Works great.

You wouldn't believe what can be washed in a dishwasher and come out clean! (if my wife only knew how many car parts have been through there)

He's right. SEM is definitely the way to go. It's not a spray paint it's an elastometric coating designed to adhere to plastic. To do it right its a 4 step process that includes a soap, plastic prep, adhesion promoter, and then color coat.

Their main site is located at www.sem.ws but this link: http://www.sem.ws/tech_sheet/rap-1.pdf gives you the instructions for how to dye anything from carpet to interior plastic.

The products are available online (try amazon) or you can get them at your local Dupont or Sherwin WilliamsAutomotive paint stores. It really is a great product and you can buy it in aerosol cans or in quarts to use with your own spray gun.

PM me if you have any questions about SEM or how to use it. It sounds like I'm trying to sell the stuff, but really I'm just that impressed with the results!

Re: Car interior paint?!

you really should try a search first cuz about two months ago i asked what the best interior paint is and i got about a 3 page response to my question with sites ans where to buy it and also that you should use pigment dye for the fabrics because it will work much better and not change the feel of the carpet at all. but SEM was overwhelmingly the way to go with the interior plastics. I havent done mine yet but ill bve sure to do before and after pics and post like everthing else.
