I think the designed was a bit different too. IIRC, those early years had a bit of a beveled-looking edge.

I'm not sure about camaros but 82-84 bird dash pads are different than 85-92. They are more square in the corners and have 2 lines running along the front. Here's a picture of the pad in my 84 TA...

The same is true for Camaros, but all 82-92 Camaro dash pads should work in all years. I had a newer one in my 82 and it fit just fine.

Re: dash pad in 82 are diff

I used a newer one in my '82 TA and it worked fine.. It's a slightly different style, but no one has called me on it. At least it's not cracked.

85-92 style pads will fit just fine with no problems. and just like you said, chances are no one is going to notice. and if you want the 82-84 style be prepared to pay twice what you would for an 85-92 style pad.

Re: dash pad in 82 are diff

On the '82-'83 camaro dash pads being different you're right. They have a similar more squared edge like the '82-'84 Firebirds. The difference being the Camaro's is done with simulated stiching.I have a dashpad out of a '85 in my '83 and it fits just like the original.I think the '91-'92 Camaro dashpads are somewhat different because of the redesign of the dash.
Carls1982z another possibility is they sent you a dashpad for a Firebird. The width on those is less than on the Camaro's.I would look at the Ebay ad to see how it was worded and contact the seller(just my .02).

I think you're the one that asked question on my auction. The later pads will work just fine in the earlier models.

The main problem is that people advertise that the pads will fit both Camaro/Firebird. They're two different animals and won't work right and I *think* thats your problem that you are having.

Yes, that is the problem with ebay...alot of stuff is advertised '82-'92 Firebird and Camaro. Over the years of owning my '82 TA I have come to know that the universal "82-92" wont always work.

The dashpads from all Camaro's should work with all years, same as the console, however they will NOT interchange with the Firebird. '82-'84 Firebird dash pads have the lines on the edge as someone already showed in a photo. '85-'92 they changed. All firebird dashpads will fit any year firebird. Unless you know the small differences between years, you can get the wrong information from unknowing ebay sellers.

Re: dash pad in 82 are diff

Yes 82-83 camaro dash pads were different styles personally I like the 82-83 pads better because they are thicker and have groves on the top. I have a dash pad out of a 86 camaro in my car right now it works but the style is g@y they are thin and crack way to easy. I also had a pad out of a 88 I think it was and for some reason it did not fit in my car so I am thinking any pad 88-92 wont fit right in a 82-87 camaro.

Re: dash pad in 82 are diff

For Firebirds there are actually 3 versions. 82-84, 85-89 and 90-92.
With the dash change in 90 there are slight differences in where the mounting bolts line up on the underside. As I remember 1 or 2 holes don't line up the same.
I have 2 excellent condition, 1 each of the 85-89 and 90 - 92 style sitting in my basement collecting dust.
