Yes or No?
Dont wanna pull apart my entire dash to figure this one out. I found a 140 MPH dash, and its electronic speedometer. I dont know which style mine is, so id like to find out.
So, will i be able to see/feel the cable protruding from the gauge without pulling it off? Yes or No?
If mine IS an electronic speedo, is his electronic speedo a direct bolt into mine? If no, what is different, speed sensor?

Re: Yes or No?
your speedo should be electronic, as far as i'm aware 87-up were electronic, and yes, as long as it is an original speedo it's just plug and play, i put a 140 speedo in place of my 120, i also changed the tach too. it all works properly.

Re: Yes or No?
or you could take a look at the tailshaft of the tranny for a plug or cable.

Thanks guys exactly the info i needed. Cheers.
Problem is, this car has had a few driveline changes, but the interior is still all original. You never know nowadays. We'll see what i find

Re: Yes or No?
87 base Firebirds with the V6 had a Cable, at least mine did.
But mine also did not have the full gauge cluster, it only had the 85 MPH speedo and a big gas gauge.

Re: Yes or No?
Well mine is a formula, im pretty sure it came with a v8. The owner i got it from has swapped in a 70s 355, pulled from a corvette. Before this engine went in, another 350 (carbed was in its place). I dont know what happened to the original engine, but i assume it was a 305 TBI? In any case, im fairly sure the tranny is original, it is starting to slip pretty badly behind my 355, but again, i dont know.
Heres a pic, maybe you guys can see a cable? Ill go in the garage tonite and figure it out.

Re: Yes or No?
Youd see it easier on the engine side, itll be around the brake booster. It comes directly out of the back of the gague thru the firewall and curves strait down to the trans
Side note... WTF you doin with a hammer removing interior parts?

Re: Yes or No?
haha, i was hacking up the radio pod at the back. It had 3 mounting locations i beleive possibly more, some big perimeter bolts to the dash, and one big nut at the back that bolts it to the tranny tunnel. you need to hack it up, if you plan to fit an aftermarket stereo in there, without it sticking out 2 inches or so. My floor mat is rubbery, so tools dont slide away, while i was hacking that up,i was resting all my tools in side, Turned out very well.
Waiting for nightfall, its a lil too hot to go work on my car right now.

Re: Yes or No?
Hey guys, sorry i didnt post earlier. I still cant figure it out, but im pretty certain its electronic. I took a picture of the firewall area. The only "cable" that was coming through is the accelerator cable, that hooks up to my throttle. Second pic, its the only "cable" i see thats in there, looks like it could be it, but i dunno where its coming from, or where its going.
Finally, i stuck my camera under the car, and snapped this. From cars ive stripped before, it seems that where the cabel SHOULD protrude from. (this pic was taken from drivers side, and thats the driver side rear of the trans.
Pocket, as for the stereos, not sure what your driving, but if you look at the factory radio, its very short (not deep), compared to the newer stereos. The one i have in there now is a clarion, the one before it was a pioneer. The ducting, or whatever it is in the back bulges up, and the pioneer stereo wouldnt go in all the way. It would stick out about 1.5 to 2 inches. So once i hacked that bulge out of there, it fits fine now. Its still a squeeze though, with the wiring.

Re: Yes or No?
Yup
Safe to assume you need a rear main on that trans too
Ive got a 4th gen radio, a pioneer, a dewalt or something, and 2-3 other old cd players in the radio slot no problems
Only thing i could think of that would remotely hinder you stuffing it in there would be the little bolt stud sticking up
Usually the wires snag that and dont want to go in there any farther. Zipties are your friend there
Im not tryin to preach that your wrong or anything, it jsut seemed strange and Ive never heard of having to clearance for a stereo

Re: Yes or No?
No worries pocket, i definately couldnt get my stereo in there, wires removed and all. The pod is already hacked up, so it a little late for zipties. BUt thats interesting that u didnt have any probs.
As for the trans, im not spending a penny on it, its patiently fullfilling its duty, before i install one that can stand up to my 355. The 900 fatory stall, and slow "smooth" shifts are taking their toll on the clutch packs, and the transmission is basically done. Already lost my 2-3 shift at WOT due to that 3-4 clutch pack, so a transmission replacement is in order. Will post progress on that when it comes to it.
