My car smells inside(what bout urs?)

I remember seeing a thread before, saying this guy felt like the car
smelled somewhat 'toxic' inside.

I feel the same with my car, although I wouldn't call it "TOXIC",
I feel no matter how much I wipe the dust off every corner of the car,
my car still smells like, little like oil or dust or something.

its not that bad, but I'd like to know what I can do about this?

so far I've ripped off headliner,
took middle consoles off, I always wipe dusts off top of dash pads, consoles,
and anywhere I can reach.

could it be that tremendous dusts are behind the whole dash assembly thats smelling?

or could it be beneath the carpet? caz thats one of the thing I haven't took out so far.

thanks in advance!

Your carpet insulation could've got wet, that smells really bad after a few days of sitting in the hot sun.. It would be brown if thats what it is.

I say go crazy with Fabreeze and let it air out. Thats what I did with my rear seats which I got a junkyard. Couldn't hurt to drive it around with the windows down/t-tops off while the tons amounts of Fabreeze is drying...

Re: My car smells inside(what bout urs?)

Fabreeze works great, but I believe it's really a temporary solution.

You could have some mold / fungus growing in your ac & heating ducts. I handbomb my vents with an antibacterial spray like Lysol once in a while.

You could also have some mold / fungus in your underpad. Short of replacing the whole interior, I would suggest going out to your nearest home depot, bigbox store or large supermarket with a vacuum rental place and rent a industrial steam vac for the weekend. Make sure you get (purchase) the detergent and anti-foam solution with the vacuum.

I had the same problem with a moldy smell in my car and on one hot and dry summer weekend removed the interior seats and completely steam-cleaned the seats and interior carpeting from front to back. After it completely dried the smell was gone. And still to this day I use spray lysol in the interior to keep any foul smells away.

Worked well so far.

When my interior got wet last fall, I had the same problem. I used Vinegar and water and soaked the whole interior with a spray bottle then used a steam vac to scrub everything cloth in the car, seats to headliner and that solved the problem. I removed the T-Tops and left the doors open for 2 days to completely dry everything and it smells wonderful now. GL

Re: My car smells inside(what bout urs?)

Brand new carpet for our car costs about roughly 250bux to ur door.

thats the complete set, cargo and the front.
Since no1 will really look at the cargo area anwyays, I bought my cargo carpet off the junkyard, steam cleaned it, and I will buy the front area carpet(like 150bux) brandnew one day,
caz those are worn in most JY cars.

thanks guys, I might try FABREEZE,
I bought my 97 30yr anniversary seats off this 1 guy,
and it loks nice but I think he kept it outside for a while, that
might be the contribution to being dusty.

and also I think anti bacterial crap through AC vents is a great idea
caz I know **** accumulates in those vents and they're really hard to clean.

thanks guys!

Re: My car smells inside(what bout urs?)

Smells, stains and the like

The very FIRST thing I do after I buy a used car is take it out in the driveway and strip the interior to the sheetmetal

Now clorox the steel

Use a house carpet cleaner on the carpet and cloth seats

Take a soapy rag and scrub down all the panels front and back, then scrub out as much as you can reach into the dash vents

Now windex the insides of all glass(this gets nasty)

Take the seat racks off and clean them up and give em a light coat of rattle can black

Vaccuum the bottoms of the seats

Now put it all back together and you should be set to go

Its about a 6 hour undertaking and I dont have any 3rd gens or fieros with a funky smell, not even smokers smell

Re: My car smells inside(what bout urs?)

These cars do have smells. Every third gen I had always had its smell. It wasn't bad. It was oily/fuel exhaust... smell. "The muscle car smell" is what I call it.

What I did, to get rid of the smell, was take out the interior (carpet and all). Than I replaced the carpet and put in about 10 smelly sheets that you use for drying clothes. It worked great.

it sure could be. I just pulled my carpet and it was wet under it on thre drivers side. from the top one would have never known it was wet. I also had some rust on the floor from the rug being wet so pulling it on you car might be a great idea just to inspect things.
as my floors from the bottom of the car are completely rust free. though my car was not smelly on the inside i was just doing some weight reduction 52 pounds for the complete interior carpet.

Re: My car smells inside(what bout urs?)

I recently re-did my interior (new matting, new carpet, re-upholstered seats). To replace the smell of new carpet, I put a bag of pipe tobacco in the car...I don't like smoking pipe tobacco but I do like the smell of it!

Lacking rubber backing and sound dampening material will do that.

Like it was said, a steam cleaner will take care of all the funky smells and make everything look as good as its ever going to. Highly recommended.

Re: My car smells inside(what bout urs?)

i like the way my car smells. i remember my dad used to have a 1986 buick skylark. that car always smelled "distinctive" on a warm day. not really a bad smell though. just smelled like a 80's GM interior. my 85 iroc had it too. maybe its the velour seats? my 88 iroc doesnt have it quite as much, maybe because it has leather seats.

i kinda like that "classic GM" smell...

Jim from IRace Motorsports....or IROCZONE said something about a weight reduction....with his carpet..with backing and deadening...I think, I am not 100% pos. but I do remember someone stating they could lose much weight by replacing their old carpet with new.

Re: My car smells inside(what bout urs?)

putting a new rug back in with sound deadening and such probably really won't be alot lighter than the stock rug and deadener.
but just do a rug as i have done and the reduction is significant.

Re: My car smells inside(what bout urs?)

when i first got my car it smelled like a cologne i wore immediately (a quirk of mine, i hate the smell of a used car). then it smelled like green apple smirnoff twist and chinese food because my girlfriend yacked all over my [3 weeks new] car got rid of the puke/alcohol smell tho. but hell every time i smell the cologne it will forever ALWAYS remind me of when i first got the car. fond memories i love the thing
