2000 TA steering column to 1992 TA swap
Does anybody know if a steering column and wheel from a 2000 Trans Am will fit a 1992 Trams Am without any modifications?
Thanks

Well...it will fit. It will physically bolt in... But thats about it. I cant remember 100% but you might be able to get the steering shaft to work. However the wiring is alittle different.
The 4th gen one is also longer after the firewall. The rack and pinion part doesnt really have anything to do with it. Just the fact that its longer and the connection is different.
Search around...some have done it. I dont think its worth it though. Just fix whatever is wrong with your or grab another used one.

I don't think that is going to fit in an 92, like he said the shaft is longer.

Thanks for the responses. I guess I'll find out what's wrong with mine and see about fixing it.

Well what kind of problems are you having with yours? Electrical? Floppy wheel? There isnt a whole lot aside from bearing failure that could be considered catastrophic in a steering column.
Let us know whats goin on and Im sure help is available for the fix.

I'm also doing the same and found this...https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/susp...ing-shaft.html
The third gen steering shaft is collapsable and I mounted it on this afternoon, so the 4th gen column physically bolts right on to the 3rd gen steering shaft. I'm not too sure about what to do about the electrical wiring since I'm trying to swap everything over from a donor 2000 TA.

Yeah but did the thirdgen steering shaft bolt up without modification?? And is the steering wheel now straight or 90* off? I remember hearing somewhere where someone got it to fit..bu the steering shaft inside the column was off by 90* or something.

that's true I didn't check that out. but either way I think you're right when you said it's not worth it to make all the electrics compatible. I'm going to save myself the hassle and just keep the third gen column unless someone has done it without putting too much time into it.

Some of the connectors will work. I think the ignition plug and high beams switch were the same. But the big connector for turnsignals and horn and hazards and all that jazz was a totally different plug. For me atleast (87 TA). That alone just made it not worth it. I already did enough wiring with the engine swap. haha. I still have to take my column apart and tighten those screws for the tilt part that always come loose. Its not too bad yet tho...so Im procrastinating
