Cigarette Lighter Fuse?

Well, I tried searching and couldnt find the answer I needed. I have a 1990 Firebird Formula and since I bought the car the cigarette lighter has not worked. I knew because the first day driving it, my bic ran out and I tried using the lighter, but it wouldnt get hot. I figured maybe a new lighter. Well, the other day I needed to plug in my GPS and when I plugged it in it didnt turn on. So that means the lighter isnt getting the 12v its supposed to.

I tried looking for a cig lighter fuse under the drivers dash, and found none. Does anyone know where the fuse is located for this? I had one blow on my 95 monte and a new fuse made the GPS work again.

Also, another question (more 1990 specific). In front of the 5-spd shifter boot there is the ashtray cover that flips up when you press the button. Mine works, but it only seems to flip up about 1/2 way, so that its hard to get in there to access the vertical lighter, and even harder to plug something in to it. Is this a factory flaw, or something that broke. Because the ashtray should be removable, but it will be a bitch to do it and not break the cover off.

Thanks guys, any help is much appreciated.

Re: Cigarette Lighter Fuse?

For the plug, it could be a blown fuse, broken/disconnected wire or the the piece malfunctioned. Look at you fuses and see if one is blown-some show the signs of been blown and check the fuses go for power items(seat, windows, so on.) Try and get the console apart the best you can and see why the lid isnt goin all the way, that could be why the lighter dont work. Keep us updated.

Re: Cigarette Lighter Fuse?

The fuse is labeled "ACC" and it should be a 20 amp. Dome light is on the same fuse, does that work?

If that fuse is not blown, or if you replace it and it blows immediately, you'll have to start following wires. This should help: http://www.geocities.com/vtcamaro/Pi...rams/pg200.jpg

Good luck!

Re: Cigarette Lighter Fuse?

Well, I will check that ACC fuse, thanks. But the dome light works fine.

What is the safest way to remove the cover to the center console?

Re: Cigarette Lighter Fuse?

I had a very similar issue. My cigarette lighter never worked for the fifteen years I've owned the car. I finally got around to removing my console shift plate to fix what I thought was the door spring. When I removed the cigarette lighter, I found that the previous owner was a smoker. There was a lot of ash compacted down inside the lighter area. Additionally, the prongs or whatever you call them in the bottom of the lighter was very corroded. I disassembled the lighter and removed it. I checked the power and ground wires which both worked just fine. Cleaned out all the gunk that was caked in there and then removed all the corrosion. Put everything back in and it all works just fine. The only cost involved was for the vinegar to soak the corroded parts in.
