Re; adding cupholders....
I finally took a hammer and a few chisles to my local 'You Pick and Pull Your Part' type wrecking yard today. I wanted to see where I could adapt areas for cupholders.
After smashing open the top of the center console shifter area just in front of the padded oppening storage area, I discovered that there is about 9 inches of depth room to add a single cup holder type of some kind.
I also pulled a push button opening twin cup-holder unit out of a Mitsubishi Diamante that's about one inch thick, about another inch wider than the air vent in the top center of the dashboard and needs approximately 6 inches of mounting depth behind the opening face. There is no room under that center vent until just above the climate controls and stereo. Nor did I smash open the front of the dash between that center vent across to where in a normal car there would be a glovebox to see if there was a one inch by 6inch depth slot to slide the damn Mitsubishi fancy cup holder into (It hit near a hundred degrees by 1pm and inside the cars it was an open oven.
I don't want to have cheapo door units that can easily be bumped. Perhaps there's some ideas' some of you have that would work well????? I've never pulled the factory stereo; any room above or below there?????

I've seen a guy make a black housing under the vents for a similar Mitsubishi cup holder (I believe it was from a Galant) actually, check out this thread...

I remember the good old days before cars came with 33 cupholders, when we managed just fine with the slurpee in one hand and the cheeseburger in the other, driving a 5 speed through downtown traffic.
And yeah, it was uphill both ways and we wore barbed wire condoms.

I hope you didn't break any good console tops!
I've seen those slide-out dual cup holders, with the flip down bottoms, mounted under the center vents in a Camaro dash.
I'm only using this page as an EXAMPLE. I have no experience with these, or the company selling them.

i have a 92 taurus sho drink holder/coin tray unit i pulled from a junker. it's din sized, just like a radio. the coin tray slides out on top, and the drink holders are on the bottom, with the supports swinging out. sould be easy to adapy to most anything.

Re: Re; adding cupholders....
While I was wiring up some accesories in an overhead console today, I took a better look at the nice Mitsu. cup holder I had picked up awhile back. I'm thinking of going back to the wrecking yard and pulling one of the center dash vents out of a camaro and use that as a housing base to slide the cupholder in. I'd just have to thin it so it wouldn't be so tall. However, that other Mitsu. cupholder looks excellent mounted. I suppose it would help to measure the exact width of that vent and start going through rows of cars till I found one closest.
What I need is a way to bring some sort of battery operated saw so I can cut into a camaro dash front to see how much depth room there is to sink a hefty unit like I got. It sticks out close to two inches further than the level front of the center vent box.
I also wouldn't mind building the top of the center console compartment up a few inches to have more storage space, or at least a way to create seperate compartments for papers, CD's, pens and change, etc. I'll be modifying the upper console so that my radar detector will slide into the leather pocket and I just put two power ports in where the extra odometer was. Still don't know what I'll use the flashlight space for.........

Re: Re; adding cupholders....
When you use the term: "Din Size", what's the actual definition?
And EMORY 4-4-2; is your Taurus unit installed already or??? What do you think about the width and depth for fitting in closely for under the Vent housing, or do you have a different spot for it?
Nitro
P.S.; As for those barbed wire condoms- when I was 14, the rancher across the road told me they were called 'french ticklers'. I was kinda leary about using them at first because the fastening staples were a little scarey.... But as I got older, I learned that the trick was in knowing how to yank them off.

Re: Re; adding cupholders....
ya know i have been thinking about this for quite some time...i was going to get the cup holders from hawks, the ones in the armrest thing on the door, but then i loose that huge handle to close the door with really adn i'll have a hole there where it did go...i was looking at the idea that stephen came up with, that cup holder is pretty neat, i'm wondering if i can maybe put that near the bottom of the drivers and passengers side of the console, and support itin there somehow so that i'll always have a cup holder there, and its kinda outta the way too, i sit far from the steering anyway.....but i dunno quite yet, i was going to fab a cup holder (not too hard, its just a cylinder with no top) but the only problem is that GM didnt really give us anywhwere to put a cup holder even if we can get one lol
Re: Re; adding cupholders....
97-02 4th gen center console = 4 cupholders. The center cupholder on those is like a 2 in 1, it holds two different sizes of containers, i think its the 32oz gatorade that fits in there well, maybe power-ade, dont remember.
Re: Re; adding cupholders....
if you don't mind dropping some coin, there's always the street rod market. i forget who makes them, but there's one company that makes a sweet aluminum unit that's very thin and swings out. if i have any street rodder mags laying around i'll see if i can see who makes it.

Re: Re; adding cupholders....
Just an idea.... although none of my Camaros have ever had one, what about the center consoles with the clocks in them, isn't that about the right size for a cup holder to be built into???

Re: Re; adding cupholders....
so you're the guy that goes around to junkyards and abolutely smashes parts in f-bodies that you don't end up buying. Knock it off! Why didn't you just remove the screws to lift up the shifter plate and see what's underneath??? And why not disassemble the dash instead of gutting it like a fish?? I always take care not to ruin parts that i'm not buying when i'm at the junkyard out of respect to both the junkyard owner and even more to fellow f-body enthusiasts that might be looking for those parts.
I'll save you some time though, behind the dash is packed solid with wiring harnesses and HVAC tubing. There is as close to zero free space as you can imagine.
