Speedometer question
Speedometer question
I swapped to 3.73 gears in my rear end, and swapped speedo gears to correct the the speedo. It worked for a few miles and then nothing. I unscrewed the cable from the speedo, and spun it, cable is still good, and the gears are still good. The problem is that the cable isn't spinning with the gear.
The speedo cable is a small square, and the speedo gear has a larger, rectangular hole. When I replaced my speedo cable I seem to remember a small insert to go into the speedometer gear, but tossed it because I didn't need it at the time.
My original driven gear for the speedo was plastic the pressed on to a metal shaft that fit the cable. The new driven gear is all plastic, with the rectangular hole.
I would really like to have a working speedometer, so any help is appreciated!

It worked for a few miles and then nothing.
Sounds like the gear on the tranny tail shaft fell off the locking "pin" maybe ??
I had a similar problem a while back ,....... read through this Thread and see if it makes sence to you. Basically - there are more than one type of speedo sending units per tranny type. ( More then one for the cable driven speedos anyway ! )

Re: Speedometer question
Pull your driven gear back out and have a look inside at the drive.
Re: Speedometer question
nope, it's all there, and my gears are fine.
The cable is not being spun because the cable is smaller than the hole that the cable goes in, hence why I need the sleeve.
When it worked for a little bit, that is because it had just enough friction to turn it, then lost it in a short period of time.

Re: Speedometer question
The cable worked with my original gearset, it was a plastic driven gear on metal shaft with a square hole the same size as the cable. Now it is all one plastic piece, with a rectangular hole for the cable. Every other cable I have looked at has the same size square cable.

Re: Speedometer question
Certainly sounds strange. I've never heard of an "insert" like came with your cable. Speedometer cables are pretty much all one size, and they fit the gears perfectly.

yeah, I know, which is why this is strange/frustrating! To clarify:
Old gear; plastic gear, metal shaft with a square hole the size of the cable:

New gear; all one plastic piece, with a rectangular hole bigger than the cable:

If ANYONE has a suggestions as to what could fix this, it would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Speedometer question
Your "new gear" is what I would normally expect to see with a cable-driven speedo. The "old gears" are actually the newer design that was used with a VSS.
Regardless, the size of the square hole in the "new gear" should be the same size as the end of the cable. The hole in the gear looks big, but it gets smaller inside. It's tapered to make insertion of the cable easier.

Re: Speedometer question
really?! well now thats interesting isn't it! I will have to delve deeper into this problem then...
maybe the little clip holding the drive gear did indeed snap...hmmmm
