Installing 4th Gen Heater Controls - Help

I was thinking of installing 4th gen heater controls in my 89 Camaro.

What are the difficulties in doing this? Is just plug in and go? I want the AC to work also. Not too concerned about the rear defrost switch.

How hard is this and what do I need to look out for?

Need advise............thanks

I'm not too familiar with the 4th gen controls, but my guess would be that they are electric, and not vacuum operated, which would require swapping in the 4th gen heater box behind the dash as well.

I read that in the sticky about swapping dashes. I didn't see anyone say the y did it. It did say that one way was to swap everything in favour of a forth gen setup but as I understood it, it required cutting the firewall (not good). I thought I read about someone who swapped a 94 or 95 control which was vacuum.

I'm trying to see how much of a headache it will be.

Wrong, they are vacuum controlled.

You will find info on what 4th gen lines you need to connect to 3rd gen lines and such. You will also find info on the hot/cold cable. The only real problem I have run into is wiring the vent control. A/C and Defrost work great, but when I switch to Vent, the blower motor shuts off.

not yet, but I will work on it, sounds like the a/c switch is what is activating the blower

Any updates on that idea for me? Doesnt make any sense to me, everything worked fine with the 3rd gen controls, and I dont have any left over wires.

Re: Installing 4th Gen Heater Controls - Help

Bill, here is whats done on my car:

The Fan speed control plug, is a direct plug in, thirdgen/4th gen are the same
The Vent selector is vacuum operated on both 4th and third, mine are cut/heat shrinked to the corresponding hose (not all are colour matched)
For heat selection, they are both cable driven, however, they are a different type of cable, it looks like it shouldnt be too much work to get it set up properly, but i havnt bothered, as mines a summer only car.

I dont have a/c in my iroc, so i cant help you there.
