speedometer cable reconnection

I am trying to remove the speedometer to connect the speedometer cable, and was unable to remove the whole plate. I got the front black plastic plate off, the clear plastic plate, and the black metal plate, but was unable to continue. Im not sure of the best way to go about removing the speedometer, and was looking for some guidence of what to do next. (either remove the whole thing, or if i could just take out the speedometer.)

thanks a bunch.

You don't need to remove the cluster to reattach the cable--in fact that's the most difficult approach. Follow the cable under the dash to the cluster and push the cable onto the speedo head (make sure it's secure. Give it a pull).

Re: speedometer cable reconnection

Thanks guys,

After skinning the knuckles and bangin my head on the hood, I finally took your advice. I wish I was smarter about this and looked here first. Now does anyone know how I get the 4 hours back.

THanks
Rich

Re: speedometer cable reconnection

I checked the cable like you told me to do..and found it was securely plugged in. i followed the cable all the way to the transmission, where i found it was also securely connected. on the way however, i noticed a junction of 2 different cables (the one for the speedometer goes into this metal connector looking thing with the cable from the transmission hooked in on the other side (sorry im not too good at descriptions)) i was wondering if this is normal...(i would think the speedometer cable to be one continuous unit.)

thanks,
matt

Re: speedometer cable reconnection

thats a trunsducer ... 82-83's had them not sure why it's on your car ... maybe for aftermarket cruise control or something.

Verify that both cables spin freely--one or the other could easily have snapped. If both move (and the upper one spins the speedo head), then I ASSUME the transducer is the culprit.
