Hatch Motor?
Hatch Motor?
I have had so much trouble trying to find a replacement for my 91 Firebird. The motor I have installed on my Firebird doesn't look like this particular model that is listed on Hawk's:
http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/in...OD&ProdID=1336
I ordered it and it doesn't fit my car -- any idea why it would be listed as a replacement for a 91 firebird on his site when it doesn't fit?
Does anyone know where I can get a replacement?

Re: Hatch Motor?
The reason why is there were two versions of pull-down motors used in model year 1991. Early 91 used one with a metal frame, (that is the version Hawks sold you). Later 1991-92 used a smaller lighter version that has a tan-colored plastic frame). Whenever a customer calls wanting parts or a remanufactured pull-down unit I ask them several questions to determine which of the two styles they have.
Early style: Tan colored plastic frame (where the 3 bolts hold it to the car), two small guides in the track, hatch hook is made of stamped sheet metal pieces. Weight is under 3 lbs.
Later style: Metal frame (where the 3 bolts hold it to the car), four larger guides (88-early 91) or eight small guides (86-87) in the tracks, hatch hook made of a formed round rod. Weight is up to 6.6 lbs. depending it you have a manual hatch release or solenoid hatch release.
Now you know the difference.
Now I see I'll need to update the description of them on my web site (and let Hawks know to update theirs as well).

Re: Hatch Motor?
Apparently there are 3 different styles...
My 87 GTA one is out, so I bought one from a Houston guy, went to put it on, didn't fit.
Pulled one from a 89 GTA....it didn't fit either.
So, I've got 3 different styles of pull down motors.

Re: Hatch Motor?
I just edited my earlier response. For some reason I can't edit my original post. I must have been asleep when I originally posted. I had the "early" and "later" styles reversed. I've corrected it now. Yes there were 3 styles of pull-down motor used, but the 1986-87 and 1988-early 91 are interchangeable. The 1986-87 has a large white plug on the blue wire. The 1988-91 has a much smaller black plug on that same blue wire. You'd just need to cut and splice your old plug onto the replacement unit if you got one that didn't match yours. In the case of the late 91-92 there is no replacement other than another one of the same style. Below is my edited response I posted earlier.

To avoid hacking/splicing - wouldn't it be better to simply unplug the relay and harness from the originall hatch motor and plug it into the replacement ??

Re: Hatch Motor?
Sure, assuming of course that the striker sensing switch on the old pull-down unit was good. If not, it is a simple matter to cut and splice the correct plug onto the replacement unit.

Re: Hatch Motor?
The plastic tracks that my trunk motor run on just fell to crumbs! So the motor wobbles. Do they have replacements for those?
When looking at my trunk motor, I had a stray black wire with a black plastic connector on it, that wasn't plugged in and I could not find where the heck it went! Could that possibly be the automatic trunk release? A option my car did not come with? Thus, there is no place to plug it?

Re: Hatch Motor?
IDK why it has it, but I hate it, Mine is working right now, but it's only a matter of time till it goes out. I'm going to do a search to see if there is a way to disable the motor while it's down so the latch work like a normal hatch.
